Fierce Andre Russell reveals why he kept bowling bouncers to Pakistan

NOTTINGHAM: Pakistan was brutally thrashed by West Indies in its first match at the ICC World Cup 2019 on Friday with the team managing to muster a total of 105 runs only.West Indies' staggering performance stole the light of the game with fast bowler Andre Russell's ferocious bowling propelling the team to gain an easy seven-wicket win against Pakistan. In an interview to Hindustan Times after their thrilling triumph over Pakistan, Andre Russell revealed the reason he kept delivering bouncers to Pakistani batsmen. “A lot of people have been saying that I have been coming in the team as a big hitter. A lot of people don’t remember I’m a fast bowler. I think they underestimate me. I have been getting jealous in the past couple of years with people calling me a medium pacer. When my name comes on the big screen it says medium pacer. I say ‘who you talking to?’ I show them I can bowl 90. I think they should put some respect on my name, that medium pace should go to fast,” said Russell. The fury was evident in the Windies' fast bowler performance as Pakistan's Fakhar Zaman and Haris Sohail experienced the wrath of him, which was carried on by fellow bowler Oshane Thomas.“Andre Russell started it and it was working so I just followed him. We mixed it up, pitched it up, went short and it worked,” Thomas said. “I just picked up where he left off,” he added. The next target was Babar Azam who was dismissed shortly after by Thomas  with an outswinger, prompting Hope to lunge to his right to complete a fabulous catch. Imad Wasim was the next to be dislodged by Windies' skipper Jason Holder.A very reluctant Sarfaraz Ahmed was also removed quickly, who couldn’t survive wicketkeeper Shai Hope’s call for a review after the umpire had adjudged the Pakistan captain had not edged the ball.

ICC World Cup 2019: Williamson urges New Zealand to get ´scrappy´

CARDIFF: Kane Williamson has warned New Zealand to be ready for difficult World Cup pitches where "scrappy" cricket is essential as they begin their campaign against Sri Lanka. The tournament has already witnessed two contrasting games as England scored 311-8 despite a tricky surface in their tournament opening win against South Africa at the Oval. But on Friday, the West Indies bowled out Pakistan for just 105 in their one-sided win at Trent Bridge.Despite big scores predicted in the English summer, New Zealand captain Williamson cautioned his players not to get stuck to a plan and adjust according to the situation as they prepare for their opener in Cardiff on Saturday."There has been a lot of talk about really high scores but I think there will be a number of games where that isn´t the case and it will require adjustment," Williamson told reporters on Friday."Guys maybe will have to push harder on a particular surface on a given day, but equally it might be about adjusting to what one-day cricket used to look a little bit like. Scores that are a bit lower and much more of that scrappy type."There will not be one way to play. We know that not every game will be a 350 score, and it´s important to be made aware of that as we go throughout this tournament."The Black Caps start as overwhelming favourites against 1996 winners Sri Lanka, a side that has slumped to ninth in the ODI rankings. But despite a 3-0 series win over Sri Lanka on home soil at the start of the year, Williamson won´t be underestimating their struggling opponents. "I don´t know how much the past really counts for as we come into a tournament. It is on the day and we know in this competition that every team can beat any of the other teams," Williamson said. "We are certainly treating all of our matches like that and want to bring the focus back onto the cricket we want to play."We know the Sri Lanka side is a bit different to the one we played at home, but we have no doubt that they are a tough side."New Zealand reached the World Cup final for the first time four years ago, but had to settle for a runners-up finish against Australia.Their bid to make amends for that painful near-miss suffered a scare when wicketkeeper Tom Latham broke his finger during a warm-up game in Australia earlier this month. But Latham has recovered in time to be available for his team´s opening game."Yeah, so fairly exciting for Tom. He´s progressed nicely and will be available tomorrow, which is great news. He´s very much looking forward to that," Williamson said.

Du Plessis urges South Africa to get World Cup campaign back on track

LONDON: South Africa captain Faf du Plessis has challenged his side to make amends for the painful start to their World Cup campaign as they aim to bounce back against Bangladesh on Sunday. The Proteas suffered a 104-run thrashing against hosts England in the tournament´s opening match on Thursday.South Africa restricted England to manageable 311 for 8 on a tricky pitch at the Oval but, tormented by Jofra Archer´s pace and bounce, their run chase never got going.Dismissed for 207 by England, South Africa´s bid to win the World Cup for the first time is off to the worst possible start. But they have a chance to get back on track when they return to the Oval to face Bangladesh and Du Plessis says now is not the time to panic. The lengthy nature of the 10-team group stage, in which each country plays nine matches and the top four make the semi-finals, gives South Africa time to recover, a point Du Plessis was keen to emphasise to his players."This is where it´s important for us to make sure that you look at the World Cup for what it is. You know, you´re going to play games. You´re going to come up against quality opposition," Du Plessis said."England were better than us in all three facets of the game. They showed why they are such a good cricket team, and now we have to look at the league. It´s a league competition."For me, it´s about making sure we look at the areas that we got it wrong and just move on."South Africa´s disciplined bowling against England gives Du Plessis reason to believe they still have plenty to offer.´Beautiful action´ Lungi Ngidi was their leading wicket-taker with three in his 10 overs, including the prize scalp of the destructive Jos Buttler.Fellow pace bowler Kagiso Rabada also offered a glimpse of his talent with two wickets and Du Plessis expects them to put Bangladesh under pressure."Lungi, he´s got a beautiful action. The way he came back (from a slow start) was beautiful. You know, to get Jos Buttler out, he´s probably one of the best strikers in the world," he said."So to get him out with good thinking, good tactics. Lungi, Kagi, those guys are going to play a role when it comes to close games at the death as the tournament moves on."Bangladesh will be playing their first match of the World Cup as they look to better their run to the quarter-finals in the 2015 edition.Mashrafe Mortaza hopes to be fit to captain the team despite suffering a hamstring strain while bowling during their warm-up match against India on Tuesday"A lot of times in such cases I face trouble bowling the first one or two overs. Once I get through that, I don´t face any more problems," he told Dhaka-based bdnews24. "But I pulled a hamstring during the sixth over," he added. "I could have stopped after four or five overs but Rohit (Sharma) and (Virat) Kohli were looking to score runs quickly during that period. I felt that I needed to practise bowling in such a situation."Tamim Iqbal did not play against India due to a thigh strain, but the opener is expected to be fit to face South Africa.

India defends Sarfaraz after trolls attack him over traditional attire

After captain of the Pakistan team Sarfaraz Ahmed met with Queen Elizabeth II earlier this week looking dapper in a traditional Pakistani attire, numerous trolls turned their muzzles his way for dressing in a ‘shabby’ manner.Leaving behind the hostility between the two countries and coming to his defense were some pure-heated Indian fans who slammed the trolls for attacking him for staying connected to his roots.Journalist Tarek Fateh’s attack drew quite the ire on social media as he criticized him for meeting the Queen ‘dressed in pyjamas’ but Indian fans wasted no time in teaching him lesson. “Captains of #Cricket playing nations competing 4 the #CricketWorldCup had a photoshoot with the Queen. Guess who came dressed in his pyjamas? None other than the #Pakistan captain (back row, left). Take a look at him in the other pic. How does one country produce ...? #CricketWC,” he stated. “Every other captain, Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, SouthAfrica, NewZealand, West Indies & Zimbabwe is smartly turned out in jacket & tie, but no, not the Pakistani. No sir, not him. I’m surprised he didn’t come in his Lungi-Banyan-Topi costume. How does ...?,” he added. Defending Sarfaraz, Indian fans came out in support of the wicketkeeper-batsman.

Federer, Nadal reach French Open fourth round, Pliskova out

PARIS: Roger Federer became the oldest man to reach the French Open fourth round in 47 years on Friday by winning his record 400th Grand Slam match, while Rafael Nadal won in four sets as women´s second seed Karolina Pliskova was dumped out.The 37-year-old Federer, playing at Roland Garros for the first time since 2015, saw off the 63rd-ranked Norwegian Casper Ruud 6-3, 6-1, 7-6 (10/8) on Court Suzanne Lenglen. It is the 14th time the 20-time Grand Slam champion has reached the second week in Paris, and he will face Argentina´s world number 68 Leonardo Mayer for a quarter-final spot."It was hard to find weaknesses in his game, so I´m relieved, I´m now going to have a good shower and it´s going to be great," said the 2009 winner, who hit 52 winners and served 11 aces past Ruud, whose father Christian played the 1999 French Open when Federer made his debut.Federer is the oldest man to book a last-16 place since Nicola Pietrangeli, a two-time champion, at the age of 38 in 1972.The 20-year-old Ruud, who was ranked as low as 135 earlier in the season, started well, but Federer broke for a 4-3 lead with a sumptuous flicked backhand passing shot and wasted little time in finishing off the set.Third seed Federer romped through the second set, hitting 17 winners, and then quickly recovered an early break in the third as Ruud started to find some rhythm. The underdog did well to force a tie-break, saving two break points in game seven, but Federer moved through the gears in the breaker to take a 6-4 lead.Ruud saved back-to-back match points to keep Federer waiting, though, but saw a set point come and go as the Swiss great successfully served and volleyed before finally completing the win on his fourth match point with an emphatic smash.Nadal sees off Goffin Reigning champion Nadal survived a blip to continue his bid for a record-extending 12th French Open title with a four-set win over David Goffin, ten years to the day since his shock 2009 exit to Robin Soderling. The 17-time Grand Slam winner bounced back after an excellent third set from Belgian 27th seed Goffin to win 6-1, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 and take his incredible Roland Garros win-loss record to 89-2 -- those two defeats coming against Soderling in the last 16 a decade ago and against Novak Djokovic in 2015.Nadal maintained his record of never having lost in the first week in Paris, although he withdrew injured before the third round in 2016.He powered 38 winners past Goffin on Court Philippe Chatrier to set up a fourth-round clash with Argentinian Juan Ignacio Londero."David is a very good player. I started the match at a good level," said Nadal. "After, in the third set, he played very well. I´m very happy to reach the last 16."Later on Friday, play was stopped due to darkness with former champion Stan Wawrinka leading Grigor Dimitrov 7-6, (7/5), 7-6 (7/4), while Stefanos Tsitsipas and Filip Krajinovic played until 9:42 p.m. local time until the match was halted with the Greek star 7-5, 6-3, 5-5 ahead.Second seed Pliskova crashes out Pliskova exited the French Open in a blaze of unforced errors as she was comfortably dismissed 6-3, 6-3 by Croatia´s Petra Martic. The 31st-seeded Martic will face Estonia´s Kaia Kanepi for a place in her first-ever Grand Slam quarter-final.Pliskova´s defeat means Naomi Osaka will retain the world number one spot after Roland Garros.Pliskova was considered one of the favourites after winning the Italian Open in Rome, but said Roland Garros´ premier Chatrier court did not play to her strengths."I think the court is pretty slow, so you just have to play some extra shots," said the former world number one, who is still yet to win a Grand Slam title.Garbine Muguruza, the 2016 champion, made short work of Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, winning 6-3, 6-3, as the ninth seed´s disappointing clay season ended on a low note.Spanish 19th seed Muguruza reached the fourth round for the sixth successive year and set up a tie with last year´s runner-up Sloane Stephens.Johanna Konta became the first British woman to book a place in the second week in 36 years by thrashing Slovakia´s Viktoria Kuzmova 6-2, 6-1.Elsewhere in the men´s draw, Japanese seventh seed Kei Nishikori edged out Serbia´s Laslo Djere in an epic encounter 6-4, 6-7 (6/8), 6-3, 4-6, 8-6.

Pakistan’s batsmen must learn how to see-off the ball, says Wasim Akram

NOTTINGHAM: Pakistan’s former captain Wasim Akram has criticized Pakistan’s approach of not staying wicket after team’s defeat in its opening match against West Indies here at Trent Bridge on Friday.Talking at Geo’s program “Swing Ka Sultan”, the former captain and now the commentator said that Pakistan’s batsmen must learn how to see-off the ball.“We have been playing on flat wickets of Sharjah and Dubai for years and that’s why we struggle when we get short balls on wickets like this. Today the batting shortcomings were exposed, everyone has seen the match and people now know exactly where to bowl to Pakistani batsmen,” Wasim said.“After losing two initial wickets, players had to stay on wickets but they couldn’t. They must learn how to stay on wicket and seeing off the ball. In such conditions, you have to survive initial overs,” the former captain highlighted. He said that that all the batsmen struggled against West Indies and there’s not much to blame to lower order, however he did criticize Hasan Ali for the way he got out.“It looked like that he was chicken-hearted, when there was a set player at the other end then his job was to stay and rotate strike back to him there was not any need to slog and lose the wicket,” he added.Wasim said that Pakistan team will really have to work hard to make a comeback adding that team must bounce back in the tournament. “It’s a long tournament and team can bounceback. I wish they do. For their own’s sake, for the fans’ sake, but they’ll have to work hard from here, they must be seen fighting till the end, play like fighters and then rest is good,” he said.Replying to a question, Wasim said that he was happy to see Aamir taking wicket and his return to form is a good sign for the team.

It was our bad day, we didn’t play good cricket: admits Sarfaraz

NOTTINGHAM: Nottingham: Pakistan Cricket captain Sarfaraz Ahmed says his side would want to forget the poor performance against Windies as a “bad day” and make a strong comeback in matches to come. West Indies had defeated Pakistan by 7 wickets in Trent Bridge Nottingham after Pakistan was bowled out for mere 105 runs.Speaking at the post match press conference after Pakistan’s defeat, Sarfaraz said that there are eight more matches to go and Pakistan team will surely make a comeback.“We lost some quick wickets in first ten overs and we couldn’t recover well from the early setback,” he said. “It wasn’t our day, it was just a bad day, we will try to move on from here and recover before next games. I am confident that the team will bounceback in next games,” the wicket-keeper batsman hoped. The fast bowler added that early start of matches has made toss very important in the tournament and teams would love to bowl first after winning the toss.“This is not an excuse but toss has become important in matches here, teams will try to get advantage of early overcast conditions here if they win the toss,” he said. “We knew exactly how west indies would bowl to us and we were well prepared, but we couldn’t execute it,” Sarfaraz said, adding the spell by Andre Russell changed the game.He also agreed that batsmen’s shot selection was poor and they could’t stay on wicket.“We will sit down and analyze our mistakes and try to correct them before next matches,” he promised. He was addressing the press conference just after the match, in which West Indies defeated them by seven wickets after bowling them out for a meagre total of 105 runs. Safaraz said: “We lost wickets in the first ten overs due to which we came under pressure”.However, he expressed hope that his team will click as there are eight matches remaining in the tournament. “We’ll come back in our next matches, forgetting today’s defeat”.The Pakistan captain said: “We already knew about the bowling of the West Indies but we came under pressure due to falling wickets too early”.He said it was Andre Russell’s deadly spell which changed the complexion of the game. The West Indies captain Jason Holder also spoke at the press conference and said that

NOTTINGHAM: Jason Holder sounded a warning for West Indies´ World Cup opponents ahead of their opening game against Pakistan on Friday, saying his team are playing with a smile on their faces. The two-times world champions had to battle to reach the World Cup in England and Wales, reaching the tournament via a qualifying competition in Zimbabwe last year.Since then they have found form, with batsmen Chris Gayle and Shai Hope particularly impressive, squaring a home series against top-ranked England 2-2 and then reaching the final of a tri-series in Ireland.Holder was positive on the eve of the game at Trent Bridge, with his team boosted by a 91-run win over a formidable New Zealand side in a warm-up game in which they scored a mammoth 421 runs."One thing I like coming into this tournament is that every player is in a good frame of mind. Everybody is playing with a smile on their face, and I think that´s how we play our best cricket," said Holder, captaining in his second World Cup."We´re fearless, we enjoy what we´re doing and we enjoy one another´s company. I can safely say within the group we´ve got that."Holder said Hope´s consistent scoring was a major factor for the West Indies."Shai has been carrying some form for a long time in the limited-overs format, and he´s really confident," said Holder of the 25-year-old batsman, who has hit five hundreds and four half-centuries in his past 16 ODI innings."I think he´s worked out pretty much his method of scoring in this format. As I say, it´s been very, very consistent, which as a group we´ve probably lacked in the recent past."Holder played down the hype around his batting line-up, tipped to possibly break the 500-run barrier for the first time."Look, I don´t want to sit here and try to pre-determine what´s going to happen, but I just think in this situation we play a normal cricket game," said Holder, whose team were involved in a world-record 46 sixes in a match against England in Grenada.Holder said his team would not take anyone for granted even though they are facing a Pakistan team who have lost their past 10 completed ODIs."We just want to be as professional as we possibly can, not take anything for granted. I don´t think we´re in a position to take anything for granted," said Holder.

ICC World Cup 2019: Afghan cricketers bring joy to war-torn nation

Kabul: When automatic gunfire erupted across Kabul last week, residents initially feared yet another terror attack was under way.Flag-waving crowds were instead marking another Afghanistan cricket victory -- this time over neighbours Pakistan -- with pistols, shotguns and AK-47s blasting into the night sky.The World Cup warm-up victory over the cricketing powerhouse illustrates how far the players from the war-torn country have come."If the Afghanistan team play well, it will be a proud moment for all ethnic groups and for the entire nation," 18-year-old Kabul resident Bashir Ahmad told AFP.The triumph was particularly sweet, as Afghans often blame Pakistan for their country’s security crisis and economic woes."Defeating the number one enemy is a treat to watch for Afghans, especially for our heroes," Nazir Naseri posted on Facebook."Finally our waiting has ended, we finally defeated Pakistan."- Fasting, training, playing -Afghanistan secured their place in the World Cup, which started on Thursday, by beating Ireland on their way to winning last year’s qualifying tournament. They will open their campaign against defending champions Australia in Bristol on Saturday after a string of recent performances that show they are more than just a feel-good story from a conflict-riven nation. They beat both Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in last year’s Asia Cup and tied with eventual champions India. But their build-up to the World Cup, which included a defeat at the hands of England, has not been without controversy. In April, successful captain Asghar Afghan was replaced with the little-known Gulbadin Naib, a move that drew widespread criticism on social media.Training has been complicated by the holy month of Ramadan, which does not end until a few days after their first World Cup match."The Afghan cricket players are observing the whole month of Ramadan, they pray and they are devotees, and a very pious bunch of people," Farid Hotak, the Afghanistan Cricket Board spokesman, told AFP, adding that they had even been fasting during training.- Message of peace -On a recent cloudy afternoon, a group of teenagers was playing cricket on a dusty, dirt pitch in Kabul. The Afghan boys were observing Ramadan so had not eaten since dawn, but their enthusiasm was undented as they whacked a taped-up old tennis ball down the bumpy field."Afghanistan has made great strides in cricket. The national team is an inspiration for me," said 17-year-old Mohammad Ziarmal."Cricket brings a message of peace, joy to people, unity and love," he said, adding with a smile he was "confident" Afghanistan would perform well in England and Wales.Ask any Afghan cricket fan and they will invariably mention spin bowler Rashid Khan, the world’s top-ranked Twenty20 bowler and the nation’s superstar."We have a great blend of players in our national team for the World Cup such as Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi," Ahmad said."They are the match-winners of our team."- Taliban fans -Afghanistan caught the cricket bug thanks largely to a new generation growing up in refugee camps in cricket-obsessed Pakistan.Even the Taliban are fans, and eventually allowed the sport to be played during their austere regime. In recent years, officials from the insurgency have said they continue to support cricket. The Afghan team has enjoyed a remarkable rise over the past decade and are currently seventh in the Twenty20 rankings.Ahmad said he was proud his country would be playing Australia on Saturday."The Afghan team did not even exist when Australia won several World Cup trophies, and now we are playing against them," he said.Kabul shopkeeper Farhad Wahab said whenever Afghanistan play, his whole family gathers to watch the match on television."Watching cricket matches brings a lot of fun and joy for all of us," he said.Last month, an Afghan man made a replica of the World Cup trophy out of grass, and images of his work quickly went viral, ending up on the national news.Businessman and amateur artist Amanullah Kaliwaal has done something similar, making a trophy out of stones."I love cricket from my childhood and I am a big fan of it. I wanted to make something that I can gift to our cricket national team in the future and I made this," Kaliwaal told AFP while holding the trophy."We are hopeful, we trust our team, as the team is very strong.... God willing, we may win the World Cup."

ICC World Cup 2019: Smith, Warner hungry as Australia launch WC campaign against Afghanistan

London: Steve Smith and David Warner will seek redemption on the biggest stage as they re-launch their one-day international careers for Australia against Afghanistan at the World Cup on Saturday. The star batsmen were both banned for a year for their roles in a ball-tampering scandal but they have found form on their return to the international set-up.Warner was the top runscorer in the recent Indian Premier League while Smith struck a hundred in a warm-up victory against England last weekend. The defending champions have endured a tumultuous past year but the Aaron Finch-led side are peaking at the right time and are considered one of the favourites in the 50-over showpiece event. After edging out hosts India 3-2 in a five-match ODI series in March, Australia welcomed back Smith and Warner with open arms. But they are not expected to be given an easy ride by English fans, with former captain Smith being booed and called a "cheat" during the England warm-up game.Former Australian paceman Brett Lee expects the pair to make big contributions but has warned they might need thick skin playing in front of the English crowds."I don’t think they have got a point to prove, they will just be happy to be back playing for Australia," said Lee, who won the tournament with Australia in 2003."They have been welcomed back to the Australian cricket team with open arms, and I reckon they have a shot at winning."You have got the Barmy Army, you have got guys like Kevin Pietersen chirping at me already. They are going to cop some sledging, but you need thick skin," he added.- ‘United front’ -Australia also boast a potent pace attack led by Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc, ably supported by Jason Behrendorff, Nathan Coulter-Nile and Kane Richardson.Spinners Adam Zampa and Nathan Lyon lend variety to the bowling attack that combined to get the better of England and Sri Lanka in warm-up games. The five-time champions will start as overwhelming favourites in Bristol against an Afghanistan side only playing their second 50-over World Cup.Afghanistan’s rise from associate-nation status to cricket’s elite has been nothing short of a fairytale. The minnows witnessed a captaincy change two months before the start of the World Cup, with little-known Gulbadin Naib named leader of the ODI side in place of Asghar Afghan, a move that did not go down well with some senior members of the team. But the team have now settled to focus on their World Cup campaign."Gulbadin has said he’ll make use of Asghar’s experience (at the World Cup). They are a united front now," said chief selector Dawlat Khan Ahmadzai."Changes do happen, like Sri Lanka did with their captaincy."Star spinner Rashid Khan carries the team’s hopes on his shoulders with his ability to run through opposition batting -- he tops the world Twenty20 bowling rankings and lies third in the 50-over standings.Afghanistan, who beat Pakistan in a World Cup warm-up match, are setting their sights high."There was no Rashid or Mujeeb (ur Rahman) in 2015 so this time we are aiming for a semi-final berth. With the team composition we have, we can definitely surprise a few teams," said Ahmadzai."We have identified teams we can beat but obviously I can’t tell you which teams."

ICC World Cup 2019: New Zealand begin WC charge against Sri Lanka

London: New Zealand are happy to go under the radar as they prepare to launch their campaign for World Cup glory against Sri Lanka in Cardiff on Saturday. The Black Caps reached the final four years ago for the first time after six semi-final defeats, only to be soundly beaten by Australia in Melbourne.Kane Williamson has replaced the swashbuckling Brendon McCullum as captain but the core of the team that came so close in 2015 remains.Since the last World Cup, New Zealand have risen as high as second in the world rankings but have also been beaten at home by South Africa, England and India.New Zealand beat fancied India in their opening World Cup warm-up game before going down to the West Indies.Former Kiwi paceman James Franklin is confident Williamson’s side can claim their first World Cup trophy."New Zealand are in a sweet spot. No one’s talking about us too much," he said at the opening party of the 12th edition of the 50-over tournament."We’re forever the underdogs and that suits us quite well.... If we can get some form going over the next few weeks, there’s no reason why New Zealand couldn’t go on and win the World Cup."Taylor has been in breathtaking form in recent years in the one-day game, averaging over 60 in ODIs in 2017 and more than 90 last year.Williamson, ranked 12th, and Martin Guptill, ranked 10th, are the other main dangermen in the New Zealand batting line-upTrent Boult leads an impressive bowling attack, with Colin de Grandhomme and Tim Southee for company. Spinners Ish Sodhi and Mitchell Santner offer useful variety.- Clear favourites -"The way T20 cricket goes, it can come down to six or 12 runs at the end of it, and ODI cricket is becoming an extended version of T20 cricket in my opinion," Boult said."If you can make those big 17 or 18-run overs into 12-run overs, that can make a big difference in the end. If we’re clear on that, we can go a fair way in this tournament."The Kiwis start clear favourites in their opener against 1996 winners Sri Lanka, a side that has slumped to ninth in the ODI rankings.Newly appointed captain Dimuth Karunaratne, who has returned to the ODI fold after four years away, has been handed the responsibility of lifting a team that have lost eight of their past nine ODIs.But Sri Lanka have an impressive World Cup record, with one title, two runners-up finishes and one semi-final appearance."Sri Lanka always find a way to do well in World Cups," said former captain Mahela Jayawardene."Yes, there have been some different changes to the set-up. The captain himself hasn’t played one-day cricket for a while but he’s a wonderful player.""They are trying to bring a bit more stability into the group. You still have some exciting talent -- Angelo Mathews, Kusal Perera, Kusal Mendis. There are matchwinners in that unit."Four/five wins can get you a semi-final berth and Sri Lanka would be looking at that option and try and execute each game at a time. I still feel they have got a very good chance."

ICC World Cup 2019: ‘That wasn’t my best’, says Ben Stokes after spectacular catch

London: Ben Stokes insists his astonishing catch in England’s World Cup rout of South Africa on Thursday doesn’t rank as the best of his career.Stokes capped a man-of-the-match display in England’s 104-run victory at the Oval with one of the greatest catches in World Cup history.Diving backwards to dismiss Andile Phehlukwayo with a one-handed take on the boundary off Adil Rashid, Stokes’ sensational effort was immediately labelled "the catch of the century" by former England spinner Phil Tufnell on the BBC.Stokes' spectacular catch wins heartsIt was the culmination of a remarkable day for Stokes, who also top-scored for England with 89 in 79 balls and took the last two wickets in successive balls to finish off the South Africans. But Stokes claimed he preferred his stunning one-handed grab of an Adam Voges edge in the gully during a 2015 Ashes Test against Australia at Trent Bridge.Asked if it was the greatest catch of his life, Stokes told reporters: "Nah, that one was against the Aussies, so that one ranks higher!"Stokes admitted he had misjudged the flight of the ball initially, leading Phehlukwayo’s shot to flash past him until the all-rounder leapt backwards to complete a jaw-dropping catch with his right hand."I was actually in the wrong position. It would have been a regulation catch if I was in the right place, but yeah it is one of those that sticks or doesn’t," Stokes said."I bowled the next over and Eoin Morgan had to come to me and ask if my heart rate had gone down. Things like that catch do get you fizzed up."I didn’t really know quite hard to react to be honest. I just tried to take it in."Regardless of which catch deserves top billing on Stokes’ CV, the 27-year-old was grateful to be back in the spotlight for the right reasons.Stokes had struggled to hit the heights he showed before being acquitted of affray last year following an incident outside a Bristol nightclub.- ‘Perfect day’ -He returned from the Indian Premier League (IPL) earlier this year out of form with both bat and ball. But Stokes showed England can rely on him and he hailed the resounding win in the opening match of the tournament as a "perfect day"."The best thing about being an all rounder is you can influence the game pretty much the whole 100 overs. It is always nice when you can contribute to the team winning," he said."The most pleasing thing is we have got the first game out of the way and winning like that. There were a few nerves knocking about, there definitely was for me as I have not felt like that in a long time."There has been such a long build up to the World Cup and answering questions on it for about a year now and now we are finally here and it’s nice to walk away with a win."In the last six World Cups, England had won just five of their 22 matches against top eight-ranked teams. But the tournament favourites, bidding to win the World Cup for the first time, are a far more dynamic force these days, with pace bowler Jofra Archer adding another threat with his potent combination of bouncers and slower balls.Barbados-born Archer showed why England fast-tracked him into the squad with three wickets and Stokes was suitably impressed."I played with him at Rajasthan (in the IPL) for the last two years and the way he went about things in the Pakistan series, it’s so good to see the ball flying through and the pace he’s got," Stokes said."The future is obviously bright for him."South Africa captain Faf du Plessis endorsed Stokes’s view by saying: "Archer bowled really well with the new ball."He’s a little bit nippy when he hits the crease. That’s why he is that X-factor."

ICC World Cup 2019: Every player is in a good frame of mind, says Jason Holder ahead of Pakistan clash

Despite the ground history at Trent Bridge, and their opponents’ questionable form in the lead-up, West Indies captain Jason Holder isn’t getting complacent ahead of his side’s opening clash of the 2019 Men’s Cricket World Cup.They will face off against Pakistan, who have lost their last 11 completed ODIs, as well as their one completed warm-up, against Afghanistan. Nonetheless, Holder wasn’t getting ahead of himself, speaking the day before the two sides face off, and was quick to point out his own team’s frailties rather than focusing on Pakistan’s. “We just want to be as professional as we possibly can and not take anything for granted,” he said. “We just assess who we're playing against, formulate our plans and look to execute them. You try to pinpoint particular areas that you can attack. “Us as a bowling group, we just want to be as disciplined as we possibly can. In the past we've been a bit inconsistent and just generally when you're just sitting back and analysing the game, we just want to be ticking our box in terms of being consistent and being ruthless.”Even if Holder is playing it cool, pundits and West Indies fans have been purring about the possibilities abundant in the Caribbean side. In their final warm-up game against New Zealand, the Windies racked up 412, and with Trent Bridge having been the scene of the two highest team scores in ODI history – one of which came against Pakistan – some have speculated that we could be about to witness ODI cricket’s first 500-plus total.“I don't want to sit before a game and say we're looking to score 500 or 600,” Holder said. “I just want to play it as we see it as assess the conditions like any other game. I think where the game has gone now, especially in England here, there have been some high totals, but there have been totals that are relatively low scoring. It can happen.”Still, while Holder didn’t want to make any bold claims, he was keen to talk up the merits of his team, who have come from being outsiders to being rated by many as dark horses to take home the title.“Every player is in a good frame of mind,” he said. “Everybody is playing with a smile on their face, and I think that's how we play our best cricket. We're fearless, we enjoy what we're doing and we enjoy one another's company. We've got an atmosphere that we would like to create, and we've got the energy going into this tournament that we would want to have.”

England vs South Africa: Stokes' spectacular catch wins hearts, watch video

LONDON: With his brilliant performance, all-rounder Ben Stokes dominated the ICC World Cup 2019 opening match between England and South Africa at Kennington Oval, London, on Thursday. The first day of ICC World Cup 2019 totally belonged Stokes as the 27-year-old all-rounder won the hearts of the cricket lovers  wit his blistering performance. The smashed 89 runs off 79 balls with the help of nine boundaries, claimed two wickets, took two spectacular catches and effected a run out of Dwaine Pretorius. However, one catch that helped Adil Rashid dismiss Andile Phehlukwayo (24) in the 35th left the spectators stunned in the much awaited World Cup 2019 opener, receiving a huge applause from the World cricketers. The International Cricket Council (ICC) lauded Ben Stokes in a tweet, saying: "Ben Stokes has just taken one of the greatest catches you will EVER see!"Stokes, back-pedalling and diving, held a brilliant one-handed catch in the deep to dismiss Phehlukwayo. The ICC later posted the video of the "one of the greatest catches", which started receiving the admiration of fans within no time.England began their quest to win the World Cup with a 104-run thrashing of South Africa in the tournament opener . Mushtaq Mohammad pins hopes on Green Shirts, sees turnaround in middle of WC

Former cricketer and skipper Mustaq Muhammad believes that Pakistani team will suddenly improve its performance phenomenally in the middle of the mega cricketing event underway in England. “I predict that in the middle of this tournament, the Pakistan’s success story will begin,” he told Geo News. “Our boys are well capable to do miracles and make a turnaround.” He said the 1992 World Cup team was by far better however, the present team is also doing better with Babar Azam as the best batsman. Fakhar Zaman is also a good batsman, he said. “I am pleased with the team as regards the batting,” said the former cricketer. However, there are issues with the bowling, he said. Mushtaq said the wickets in England are good and they favour the batsmen accordingly it is normal by any side to hit a 300-run score in an innings. However, it will be rather difficult to chase a target, as it will require a well-coordinated bowling attack, duly assisted with seamless fielding, he pointed out. The World Cup 2019 has started Thursday in England that is hosting the mega cricketing event after a gap of 20 years. The hosts dealt a sound drubbing to South Africa in the opener by 104 run with ten overs and a ball remaining.

World Cup a dream come true for Pakistan’s Mohammad Amir

NOTTINGHAM, United Kingdom: Pakistan spearhead Mohammad Amir says playing in the World Cup will be a dream come true after he missed the previous two tournaments following a ban for spot-fixing.The 27-year-old nearly missed out this time as he was left out of the preliminary World Cup squad, having taken just five wickets in the 14 matches before the recent one-day international series against England. He did not get to bowl in the first match against England at the Oval, which was ruined by the weather, and missed the last four games with a bout of chicken pox. The home side won the series 4-0.But selectors decided to include him in the final 15 for the World Cup in England and Wales."It´s a dream come true," Amir told AFP ahead of Pakistan´s first match against West Indies at Trent Bridge on Friday. "Every cricketer dreams of representing his country in a World Cup so this is my chance."My target is to take wickets and be a third-time lucky in England after winning the World Twenty20 and Champions Trophy," said the paceman, recalling Pakistan´s triumphs in England in 2009 and 2017.Amir said Pakistan had positive memories of playing in England, which they hoped to take into the World Cup."Our triumph in the World Twenty20 was excellent and then the Champions Trophy -- the impact of those wins are with us and the amount of support we get in the UK is extraordinary, so naturally we will like to match those."People love the Pakistan team and come in large numbers to support us. I can´t forget the final of the Champions Trophy at the Oval (2017)."
