´Amazing´ Osaka thrashes tearful Gauff at US Open as Nadal coasts

NEW YORK: Defending champion Naomi Osaka consoled a tearful Coco Gauff after a crushing US Open victory Saturday in a showdown billed as "the future of women´s tennis", while Rafael Nadal cruised into the last 16.World number one Osaka overpowered 15-year-old Gauff 6-3, 6-0 in 65 minutes to keep her title defense on track before sharing a warm embrace with an opponent overwrought by the occasion in the New York spotlight. The emotional clash was followed by tearful on-court interviews, Osaka asking Gauff to join her with the microphone as they met at the net."I said no because I knew I was going to cry the whole time, but she encouraged me to do it," tearful Gauff said after Osaka talked her into it."It was amazing, she did amazing and I am going to learn a lot from this match. She has been so sweet to me, so thank you for this."Osaka, fighting back her own tears, spoke to Gauff´s parents, saying: "You guys raised an amazing player. I remember I used to see you guys training. Both of us made it and we´re still working hard."Osaka said the match was one of her best since winning the Australian Open."This is the most focused I´ve been since Australia," Osaka said, telling Gauff: "Sorry for playing you in this mentality."The primetime third-round clash at Arthur Ashe Stadium pitted 21-year-old Japanese star Osaka, also the reigning Australian Open champion, against the American who made a fourth-round Wimbledon run on her Grand Slam debut.Serena Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam champion, called it "the future of women´s tennis", while Novak Djokovic labelled Gauff "a new superstar of tennis."But Gauff, the youngest player through to the third round here since Anna Kournikova in 1996, struggled in her first match under the lights on Ashe. She dropped her opening service game on a double fault, and while she twice rallied to level, a determined Osaka broke for a third time to snatch the first set.The top seed reeled off the final eight games in all against a despondent Gauff to sail into a fourth-round encounter with Swiss 13th seed Belinda Bencic, who was handed a walkover when Anett Kontaveit withdrew due to illness.- Rested Nadal coasts -Three-time champion Nadal returned from an extended rest to dispose of 170th-ranked South Korean qualifier Chung Hyeon 6-3, 6-4, 6-2, having benefited from three days off after a walkover. The Spanish second seed will meet 2014 champion Marin Cilic for a place in the quarter-finals."I´m happy to be in the fourth round for one more time. It was a good match," said Nadal, who quit with injury against Juan Martin del Potro during last year´s semi-final."I´m trying to play a little bit more aggressive and a little bit less than before.""It´s true last year I had some tough matches. You never know what´s better or worse," he said of his serene progress this week.Cilic, the 22nd seed and 2017 Wimbledon finalist, took out top US hope John Isner in four tight sets."I´ve played quite a few times with Rafa. When you play these top guys you have to come up with your great tennis," said Cilic.Sixth seed Alexander Zverev made it to the second week in New York for the first time after fighting past Aljaz Bedene 6-7 (4/7), 7-6 (7/4), 6-3, 7-6 (7/3).Canadian teenager Bianca Andreescu, seeded 15th, brushed past two-time US Open runner-up Caroline Wozniacki 6-4, 6-4 to extend her best Grand Slam run.The 19-year-old, a winner at Toronto and Indian Wells this season, improved to 30-4 for the year despite missing much of the clay and grass portion with a shoulder injury."I think everything is just clicking with me," said Andreescu, who had never gone beyond round two at a major prior to this tournament."I´ve been through a lot with injuries and have just taken everything I´ve learned from the past couple of years and brought it into this year."American qualifier Taylor Townsend continued her surprise run after reaching the last 16 for the first time at a Slam.Townsend, ranked 116th, followed up her shock win over reigning Wimbledon champion Simona Halep by beating another Romanian, Sorana Cirstea, 7-5, 6-2.Nick Kyrgios and Andrey Rublev do battle in the nightcap on Ashe.

´Sorry´ Koulibaly hands Juventus victory in seven-goal Napoli thriller

MILAN: Kalidou Koulibaly handed Juventus a dramatic win on Saturday with a last-gasp own goal that consigned Napoli to a painful 4-3 Serie A defeat after his side had battled back from three goals down to level the scores. The Senegal international shanked in Paulo Dybala´s free-kick under no pressure in the second minute of stoppage time to hand Juve the three points in Turin and put Maurizio Sarri´s side top with a maximum six points, leaving Napoli with nothing to show for their Herculean efforts."It´s an own goal that hurts me because it came after an incredible comeback," Koulibaly later said on Twitter."I´m sorry but I have to -- we have to accept it: we are strong. We have shown that. We´re going to prove it."Koulibaly´s blunder undid all of Napoli´s good work in fighting back from the dead with less than half-an-hour left, with goals from Danilo just 20 seconds after he came on as a substitute, Gonzalo Higuain -- back at Juventus after loan spells at AC Milan and Chelsea -- and Cristiano Ronaldo on 61 minutes giving the reigning champions what looked like an unassailable lead. However two goals in as many minutes from Kostas Manolas and Hirving Lozano shortly after Ronaldo had made it three brought Napoli back into the game, and Giovanni Di Lorenzo sent the away fans wild with a close-range finish to set up a tense final nine minutes. But with at least point seemingly in the bag, Koulibaly made it a nightmare end for Carlo Ancelotti´s men, who finished on the wrong end of a 4-3 scoreline after winning by the same margin at Fiorentina last weekend."It was a rollercoaster. We lost control of the game and got distracted, so they managed to equalise, but fortunately in the end we still won," said Higuain, who spun Koulibaly before slamming home Juve´s superb second. The champions made light of the absence of captain Giorgio Chiellini, out with anterior cruciate ligament knee injury, and Sarri, who is battling pneumonia and was not on the bench.Ancelotti meanwhile was left to regret a "wasted opportunity" after losing in such gut-wrenching fashion."It was not a positive performance. The first hour we didn´t do well. But despite the 3-0 we stayed in the game, we came back," said Ancelotti."Juventus have so much character and quality, we know that they always step up in the important moments of the season."We wasted an opportunity today."- AC Milan scrape opening win -Earlier Turkey midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu claimed AC Milan´s first three points of the season after scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win over newly-promoted Brescia. The 25-year-old connected with a cross from Spanish winger Suso to head a 12th-minute winner after Milan had lost their opener to Udinese last weekend.Poland forward Krzysztof Piatek, who finished third in Serie A´s scorers chart last season with 22 goals, Lucas Paqueta and Fabio Borini all started on the bench for the side who have been banned from this season´s Europa League for breaking financial fair play rules.Dimitri Bisoli missed a chance to equalise, sending a shot over the bar with Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma denying Ricardo Rodriguez´s deflected shot before the break.Piatek come on for the last half an hour in place of Andre Silva, with Paqueta replacing Calhanoglu five minutes later. The hosts came to life in the final 10 minutes with Piatek missing a chance to get a second goal for Milan, then setting up Paqueta who also drew a blank.

Rested Nadal coasts at US Open as Coco-Osaka showdown looms

NEW YORK: Rafael Nadal returned from an extended rest to cruise into the US Open last 16 on Saturday, while Bianca Andreescu rolled on ahead of a blockbuster showdown featuring defending champion Naomi Osaka and teen phenom Coco Gauff.Second seed Nadal, a three-time winner at Flushing Meadows, disposed of 170th-ranked South Korean qualifier Chung Hyeon 6-3, 6-4, 6-2, having benefited from three days off after a second-round walkover. The Spaniard improved his record here against players outside the top 50 to 35-1 and will meet 2014 champion Marin Cilic or top US hope John Isner for a place in the quarter-finals."I´m happy to be in the fourth round for one more time. It was a good match," said Nadal, who quit with injury against Juan Martin del Potro during last year´s semi-final."I´m trying to play a little bit more aggressive and a little bit less than before.""It´s true last year I had some tough matches. You never know what´s better or worse," he said of his serene progress this week."In the fourth round I have a tough opponent and need to be ready for this. I can´t think further than that."Canadian teenager Andreescu, seeded 15th, brushed past two-time US Open runner-up Caroline Wozniacki 6-4, 6-4 to extend her best Grand Slam run.The 19-year-old, a winner at Toronto and Indian Wells this season, improved to 30-4 for the year despite missing much of the clay and grass portion with a shoulder injury."I think everything is just clicking with me," said Andreescu, into the second week of a major for the first time."I´ve been through a lot with injuries and have just taken everything I´ve learned from the past couple of years and brought it into this year."´Future of women´s tennis´ Saturday´s primetime clash on Ashe pits 15-year-old American Gauff, who made a fourth-round Wimbledon run in her Grand Slam debut, against 21-year-old Japanese star Osaka, the reigning US and Australian Open champion."I definitely think it´s the future of women´s tennis," 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams said. "And I´m really excited to just be a fan girl and kind of watch."Even world number one and defending men´s champion Novak Djokovic can´t wait to see what Gauff and Osaka do."Coco is definitely a new superstar of tennis. It´s great to see her fighting spirit, her intensity," Djokovic said. "She´s only 15. She brings so much maturity in her game for such a young age. It´s very impressive."American qualifier Taylor Townsend vowed to ride her surprise US Open run "all the way" after reaching the last 16 for the first time at a Slam.Townsend, ranked 116th, followed up her shock win over reigning Wimbledon champion Simona Halep by beating another Romanian, Sorana Cirstea, 7-5, 6-2."I didn´t know that many people had my phone number," Townsend said when asked how she coped in the wake of her Halep upset."I made third round before but it was in another country. I got a lot of messages. It was a lot of love. My phone started dialing 911 by itself, I dont know what that was about. I just tried to keep my head on straight.""I´m going to take it as far as I can," she added. "We´re going to ride this thing all the way."Swiss 13th seed Belinda Bencic advanced via walkover as Anett Kontaveit retired with illness, while Belgian 25th seed Elise Mertens moved on with a 6-3, 6-3 defeat of Germany´s Andrea Petkovic.Nick Kyrgios and Andrey Rublev do battle in the nightcap at Arthur Ashe Stadium in a quarter that is wide open following the early exits made by fourth seed Dominic Thiem and Greece´s Stefanos Tsitsipas.Sixth seed Alexander Zverev, who has come through back-to-back five-set marathons, will fancy his chances of sticking around for week two with Slovenia´s Aljaz Bedene standing between him and a place in the last 16.

Racing driver Anthoine Hubert dies after Formula Two crash

SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS: Motor racing prospect Anthoine Hubert was killed on Saturday by a horrific high-speed crash just minutes into the Formula Two race held before this weekend´s F1 Belgian Grand Prix, the FIA announced.Hubert, who was considered a serious talent by Renault´s F1 set up, died aged 22 following a three-car pile-up also involving Juan Manuel Correa and Giuliano Alesi at the exit of the Raidillon corner, one of the fastest sections of the quick Spa-Francorchamps track.Tributes poured in for Hubert, with a "devastated" Formula One saying that "He will never be forgotten" and Lewis Hamilton hailing the Frenchman as a "hero"."This is devastating. God rest your soul Anthoine. My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family today," the reigning five-time F1 world champion said on Instagram."If a single one of you watching and enjoying this sport think for a second what we do is safe your hugely mistaken. All these drivers put their life on the line when they hit the track and people need to appreciate that in a serious way because it is not appreciated enough."Not from the fans nor some of the people actually working in the sport. Anthoine is a hero as far as I´m concerned, for taking the risk he did to chase his dreams ... Rest in peace brother."Red Bull´s Max Verstappen wrote on Twitter: Absolutely shocked by the tragic accident of Anthoine Hubert. Terrible. My thoughts are with him and his family, friends, team and loved ones."In a statement, the FIA said that BWT Arden driver Hubert died at 6:35pm local time (1635 GMT), while Correa is in a "stable condition" at the CHU hospital in Liege after suffering leg fractures in the crash.Hubert was a Renault F1 junior and the reigning GP3 series champion, and his strong performance in junior categories had earned him full backing from Renault, who were preparing him for a big future. He had won twice in the F2 championship this season, at the French and Monaco Grand Prix meetings. His death came after he hit a wall at Raidillon and smashed into Correa at high speed, flipping the American´s Sauber junior team car upside down and shattering Hubert´s vehicle, the main monocoque separating from the rear. The impact was so severe that Correa´s feet were left exposed as the nose cone of his car was destroyed and he was trapped in the cockpit.

DERBY, United Kingdom: Australia´s chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns said Mitchell Marsh had "given us a good option" ahead of the fourth Ashes Test against England after the all-rounder impressed in a comfortable victory over Derbyshire.Marsh top-scored with 74 in Australia´s 338-5 declared in Derby. He then took two wickets in three balls as Derbyshire were skittled out for 112 in their second innings before lunch on Saturday´s third and final day as Australia won by an innings and 54 runs. The 27-year-old Marsh has yet to feature in this five-match Ashes series which is now locked at 1-1 after England´s dramatic one-wicket win in the third Test at Headingley.Although England´s top order failed again during a woeful 67 all out in their first innings in Leeds, Australia didn´t bat the hosts out of the match in their second innings.Australia are set to recall Steve Smith, who made 23 against Derbyshire, for the fourth Test at Old Trafford starting Wednesday after he missed the Headingley match with concussion suffered when struck by a Jofra Archer bouncer in the drawn second Test at Lord´s.Marnus Labuschagne´s place appears secure given he has made three successive Test fifties since coming in as a concussion substitute for Smith. One way of getting star batsman Smith, whose scores this series are 144, 142 and 92, back into the side would be to drop struggling opener Marcus Harris and promote Usman Khawaja to the top of the order.Khawaja averages 96.8 in the seven Test innings in which he has opened."The area up the top is, not so much concerning, it´s been difficult for both teams up the top of the order so once again that´s an area we´ll be looking at," Hohns said after Saturday´s close."Mitchell Marsh has certainly given us a good option."If Marsh was included instead of Matthew Wade, he would give Australia an extra seam bowling option himself and potentially free them up to play Mitchell Starc without worrying the left-arm fast bowler might otherwise prove too expensive as one of just three pacemen.Wade, a former wicketkeeper turned specialist batsman, made a second-innings hundred in Australia´s 251-run win in the first Test at Edgbaston but he has struggled since with three single-figure scores in his last four innings."He played very well that innings he made a hundred," said former Australia leg-spinner Hohns."Unfortunately, things have not quite gone his way since then."That will certainly be an area we are having a look at."Old Trafford is expected to provide the quickest pitch of this Ashes, which could boost Starc´s chances of a recall."We all know he is an aggressor, so we can´t expect him to change the way he bowls too much," Hohns said of Starc, who took 4-39 in the second innings, including two in two balls to end the match, against Derbyshire."But he is doing everything he possibly can to bowl in the right areas."As for the remarkable finish at Headingley, where England all-rounder Ben Stokes´s superb 135 not out snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, Hohns said: "It was an amazing innings."No one could have played an innings like that. He won the game virtually single-handedly, and what a wonderful player he is."England in the past have had some very good all-rounders, (Ian) Botham then (Andrew) Flintoff and now Stokes."They are very lucky to have someone like that."Hohns insisted Australia could put the stunning loss behind them as they bid to win their first Ashes series in England for 18 years."We certainly had our chances," he said. "We can´t be blaming anyone but ourselves. We have to dust ourselves off and come up for the next game."

Vihari nears hundred as India close on big score

KINGSTON, Jamaica: Hanuma Vihari was grinding his way towards an elusive maiden Test hundred as India reached 336 for seven at lunch on the second day of the second and final Test against the West Indies at Sabina Park on Saturday.Dismissed for 93 on the last day of the first Test a week earlier in Antigua, the 25-year-old right-hander was on 84 at the interval, doubling his overnight score on another sultry morning where he needed more than just a little luck to survive the constant probing of the West Indies on a challenging pitch. He will resume in the afternoon session in partnership with Ishant Sharma after home captain Jason Holder and debutant off-spinner Rahkeem Cornwall offered the Caribbean side hope of limiting India´s total.Following on from an outstanding first day´s work when his figures of three for 39 off 20 overs stood out in the West Indies effort in the field, Holder struck with the very first ball of day two, breaching the defence of Rishabh Pant to give the hosts an immediate boost.New batsman Ravindra Jadeja helped Vihari in putting on 38 runs for the seventh wicket. However, he struggled to curb his natural tendency to attack and perished for 16 attempting to hoist the persistent Cornwall over long-on, Darren Bravo taking the comfortable catch to earn the newcomer a deserved second wicket. The burly Cornwall should have had the all-important wicket of Vihari as well shortly after but John Campbell could not hold on to the opportunity diving full-length to his right at slip.On 68 when he benefited from that let-off, Vihari was then thankful to be reprieved by technology ten runs later as an lbw verdict against him off Holder was reversed on review of the television replays.Sharma also enjoyed good fortune as he could have been run out on two occasions but for wayward throws from the infield.Given their struggles against a quality Indian pace attack in the first Test, the task for the West Indies after lunch is to not only to deny Vihari a maiden Test century but also to prevent the visitors getting closer to the 400-run mark in the first innings.

PCB’s Women High Performance Camp concludes in Abbottabad

ABBOTTABAD: The two-week long High Performance Camp of Pakistan Women Cricket  setup for the forthcoming Pakistan-Bangladesh and England scheduled Series and Pakistan-A team tour to Sri Lanka concluded at lush green Abbottabad on Saturday. The Pakistan Cricket Board High Performance conditioning camp to prepare women players for the upcoming cricketing season involved 30 women cricketers. The purpose of the camp was to prepare the players for the upcoming domestic and international assignments.A tough international season awaits Pakistan with series against Bangladesh and England, culminating with the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup that will be played in Australia in March next year.During the camp, the players also spent a day at the Military Academy Kakul on August 28. Other than the regular Pakistan players, youngsters were invited to the camp to get an opportunity to stake a claim for selection in the Pakistan ‘A’ squad that tours Sri Lanka in October. The camp participants have been selected by the women’s national selection committee, which is headed by former Pakistan captain Urooj Mumtaz.Former Pakistan players Asmavia Iqbal and Marina Iqbal are the other two members of the panel. The camp would also help the coaching staff as they bid to prepare strong senior and ‘A’ teams for the forthcoming commitments. The camp was part of PCB’s strategy of further improving the profile of the women’s game while providing the players regular opportunities of excelling at the top-level through strenuous training and practice.Chief Selector Urooj Mumtaz on this occasion said, “It’s important that we identify our top 30 players at the start of the season.” “We held this camp to work on our skills in all three departments of the game,” adding, “We have selected some junior players who can help form the ‘A’ team that will tour Sri Lanka in October.” She said the main focus was on the players who were in contention for the national team’s series against the Bangladesh team. The players spent the day as cadets to experience their daily routine, she disclosed. The idea was to give a different experience to the players and help them understand the benefits of a disciplined life and routine with strenuous training which should help broaden the scope of their thinking, she further added.Such activity, she said, would help them learn and observe a different life style while focusing on traits like determination, resilience and focus.“The mix of players enabled to bridge the gap at the domestic level as well as provide healthy competition within the group," he said, adding, “The camp also helped the coaches identify potential players and gauge their abilities and I really believe this camp was a wonderful opportunity for our present and future players to ready themselves for the upcoming season.”The following players took part in the High Performance Conditioning Camp: Aliya Riaz, Aroob Shah, Ayesha Naz, Ayesha Zafar, Bibi Nahida, Bismah Maroof, Diana Baig, Fatima Sana, Huraina Sajjad, Iram Javed, Javeria Wadood, Jaweria Rauf, Kainat Imtiaz, Kaynat Hafeez, Maham Tariq, Muneeba Ali, Najiha Alvi, Nashra Sundhu, Natalia Parvaiz, Nida Rashid, Omaima Sohail, Rameen Shamim, Saba Nazir, Sadia Iqbal, Sana Mir, Sidra Amin, Sidra Nawaz, Soha Fatima, Tuba Hassan, Waheeda Akhtar.Officials, including Head coach - Mark Coles, Batting coach - Iqbal Imam, Trainer - Gemaal Hussain, A’ team coach - Shahid Anwar, Manager - Aisha Jalil, Physio - Dr. Rifat Asghar Gill, Physio - Sajida Fajar.

UN chief expresses solidarity with Ebola-hit DR Congo

UN chief Antonio Guterres started a three-day tour of the Democratic Republic of Congo Saturday, expressing "solidarity" with a region ravaged by violence and an Ebola epidemic. The secretary general first visited Goma, the capital of North Kivu province which is trying to roll back an epidemic of Ebola that has claimed more than 2,000 lives in a year. Guterres was received by Leila Zerrougui, his special representative in the DR Congo. The two did not shake hands, in line with protocols aimed at curbing the spread of the highly infectious and potentially fatal disease.Guterres said he had come to express his support "with the armed forces of DRC in the fight against terrorism" which represents "a threat not only for the Congo but the whole of Africa."The UN peacekeeping mission in the country known by its French acronym MONUSCO comprises some 16,000 troops and has an annual budget of over $1 billion.A total of 130 militias and armed groups roam the North and South Kivu provinces of DR Congo, a vast country the size of western continental Europe.Guterres was due to visit a centre for demobilised former militia fighters in Goma. According to the Group of Experts on Congo from New York University and Human Rights Watch, armed groups killed 1,900 civilians and kidnapped more than 3,300 people in the region between June 2017 and June 2019.- Ebola toll rising -The demobilisation of militias is a priority for MONUSCO, which has been present in the DR Congo since 1999.On Sunday, Guterres will visit Beni, one of the epicentres of the Ebola epidemic, about 350 kilometres (220 miles) north of Goma. DR Congo health officials said late Thursday that there have been "2,006 deaths (1,901 confirmed and 105 probable)" since August 2018.It is the second-worst Ebola outbreak in history after more than 11,000 people were killed in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia between 2014 and 2016.Containment efforts have been hindered by conflict in the country´s east, as well as attacks on health workers tackling Ebola.Guterres will visit the remote area of Mangina in the bush outside Beni, where the epidemic first broke out at the end of July 2018, visiting a treatment centre and meeting survivors and health workers. As the battle against Ebola continues, former health minister Oly Ilunga, who stepped down after criticising plans by the UN's World Health Organization to introduce a second, unlicensed vaccine to the country, has been banned from leaving the country pending a probe into improper use of public funds, according to migration service documents seen by AFP on Saturday.Ilunga has been questioned as part of an inquiry into the misuse of Ebola funds. Shortly before he stepped down, the minister had been replaced by President Felix Tshisekedi as the head of the country´s Ebola response team.- Militia attacks -Apart from Ebola, Beni has been reeling under attacks since October 2014 with civilians and farmers bearing the brunt of the violence. Most of the killings have been attributed to the Islamist-rooted Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) militia group that arose in western Uganda in 1995 and has been accused of butchering hundreds of civilians."We are entirely by the side of the Congolese authorities in the fight against ADF," Guterres said in Goma.ADF fighters have also targeted UN troops, killing 15 people in an attack in December.Under the terms of its latest mandate spanning April to December this year, the UN has closed bases in the DR Congo, reviewed intervention strategy and cut civilian staff by 764 since the beginning of July. But in Beni, prominent locals called for the UN to beef up the capacity of its rapid intervention force."We want more military means to be put at their disposal to finish the ADF in Beni," mayor Bwanakawa Masumbuko said.Guterres will end his tour in the capital Kinshasa, where he will meet Tshisekedi, who recently unveiled a new coalition government after a delay of nearly eight months.

PCB unveils ambitious competitive 2019-20 domestic cricket season

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) unveiled an ambitious and competitive 2019-20 domestic cricket structure, which revolves around the creation of a more quality and intensity focused system to significantly improve first-class cricket and create sustainable success at international levels. In a press release issued here on Saturday, PCB said that the new structure would give importance to club cricket, provide the best cricketing environment to young talented cricketers, reward top performers, create employment opportunities to former cricketers and qualified coaches, and bridge the gap between domestic and international cricket. The new structure has come into existence following the federal government’s approval, on August 9, of the constitutional amendments, which were notified to the PCB on August 19. It means the 16 regions have now been absorbed into the newly formed associations, as detailed below:Sindh Cricket Association includes Karachi, Hyderabad and Larkana,Balochistan Cricket Association comprises Dera Murad Jamali and Quetta,Southern Punjab Cricket Association includes Multan and Bahawalpur,Central Punjab Cricket Association is made up of Faisalabad, Sialkot and Lahore,Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Cricket Association includes Peshawar, FATA and Abbottabad,Northern Cricket Association comprises Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Azad-Jammu Kashmir. The new domestic structure will be based on a three-tier bottom up approach; providing a clear pathway for the aspiring cricketers to graduate to the top level, bringing in more young and talented cricketers in the system. In the first tier, the 90 city cricket associations will be responsible for organising club and school cricket in their respective jurisdictions and subsequently forming their city cricket teams. In the second tier, the city cricket teams will participate in intra-city competitions within the jurisdiction of their cricket associations. In the third tier, the best performing players from the intra-city competitions will form the six respective cricket association sides that will participate in the PCB-organised tournaments.Underpinning the pathway system will be six High Performance Programmes which will provide quality cricket and lifestyle plans to equip players with the all-round skills required in the modern game. The players’ earnings will also increase in the new structure.Thirty-two non-PCB centrally contracted players would be awarded annual domestic contracts at each cricket association and will feature in first-class, non-first class, List ‘A’, and T20 tournaments during a season. The cricket associations will also be free to select players from outside the pool of 32 contracted players on per-match payment. Each of the domestic contracted players will receive monthly retainers of Rs50,000 and it is anticipated that a high-performing player will earn between Rs2million and Rs2.5million per season in terms of allowances, match fees and prize money (details to be announced in due course).Besides the players, the new structure is also expected to create employment opportunities for the qualified coaching staff and former cricketers. Along with the administrative roles, each cricket association will have a players’ support personnel staff which will include head coaches, batting coaches, bowling coaches, fielding coaches, trainers, physiotherapists and video analysts to look after first class, second XI, U19, U16, U13 teams and high performance programmes. There will also be three selectors working with each cricket association.Pakistan’s cricketing season 2019-20 will commence from September 14 with the first round of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, the country’s premier first-class tournament.A total number of 31 matches – including the final – will be played, with every team playing 10 matches, home and away, on double round-robin basis. With the commencement of the World Test Championship, red ball cricket remains a primary focus. The context behind the new scheduling will provide players with an opportunity to stake their claim and to equip themselves for the pressures of the Test Championship. The first-class and non-first-class tournaments will run simultaneously, providing the six associations depth to choose the best XI for their first class matches. The same will be the case for the List ‘A’ and T20 cricket. The event dates: Quaid-e-Azam Trophy (first-class, four-day matches, final will be a five-day fixture): 14 September – 08 October; 28 October – 13 December.National U19 tournament (three-day and one-day tournament): 1 October – 12 November.Quaid-e-Azam Trophy (2nd XI, three-day matches, final will be a four-day fixture): 14 September – 10 October; 28 October – 29 November.National T20 Cup (both first and second XIs will play simultaneously): 13-24 October. First XIs will play in Faisalabad, second XIs will play in Karachi.Pakistan Cup One-Day Tournament (both first and second XIs will play simultaneously): 29 March – 24 April 2020.*Subject to last minute changesThe PCB has decided to implement Kookaburra balls across these tournaments to help prepare domestic cricketers better for the international cricket. Since Pakistan play their home Test cricket with the Kookaburra balls, having the same brand now in the first-class and non first-class tournaments will help the players prepare better for the challenges at the apex level. It is pertinent to mention here that all limited-overs international cricket, including the ICC Cricket World Cup, ICC Women’s World Cup, ICC U19 Cricket World Cup and the ICC T20 World Cups are also played with the Kookaburra balls. To support domestic cricket and provide and improve the cricket environment for the professional cricketers, the PCB has taken measures to upgrade the quality of playing facilities, including pitches, outfields, player and umpire dressing rooms and media/broadcast working areas. In this relation, the PCB is committed to spending over PKR2billion in upgradation of stadia in Karachi, Lahore, Multan, Rawalpindi and Quetta. The PCB will undertake aggressive approach to market and promote Pakistan cricket throughout the course of the upcoming season. More details on the marketing and promotion plans will be shared in due course.Event schedules, selection committees, team compositions, coaching staffs, administrative structures and match officials’ to be announced next week.
