Arthur Masuaku: West Ham United is like my home

LONDON: The decision to sign a contract extension with West Ham United was one of the easiest, said Arthur Masuaku after he agreed to extend his contract with the English club. The left-back put pen-to-paper on a new deal with the Irons on Monday, extending his stay in Claret and Blue until 2024.“For me, it was easy to sign this contract,” Masuaku told whufc.com. “I feel like I’m home at West Ham. Even when I was with the national team I was thinking about when I will be back. London and West Ham is home now.“For me, it wasn’t time to go. Since I joined the Club, it hasn’t been an easy road, due to injuries and stuff. I feel like I can still improve. I can improve what I can do in terms of consistency, and the Club gave me this opportunity to stay for longer. “It was easy. I want to stay, and the Club wants me to stay, the chairmen and the coach want me to stay. It was an easy decision and I’m really happy about this.”Masuaku, who helped DR Congo international reach last 16 in Africa Cup of Nations, has played 75 times for the West Ham in the Premier League. Now the No26 wants to show what he is truly capable of offering to manager Manuel Pellegrini and the West Ham team.He continued: “Sometimes, in the last couple of years, I wasn’t happy with myself when I was playing. I feel like I can give a lot more for the Club, the fans, and myself. “For me, I hope this year can be the year that I improve, and I can play most parts of the games during the season. I will be happy if the coach gives me this opportunity but first, I need to prove in training and in games that I can earn my position.“The Club and the coach have given me this opportunity which means they trust me. They trust what I’m capable of and what I can do. For me, the only thing to make them happy is to give that back on the pitch with my performance, the way I can play, and to be professional. If I can do this, that would be perfect.”

Players union says football calendar is harming star players

PARIS: Top players are being put at risk by an increasingly crowded international calendar that gives them no chance to recover from matches and travel, said their union, FIFPRO, in a report published Thursday.‘At the Limit,’ a glossy 40-page document, builds on demands the union has long expressed. It wants players to have five-day breaks between matches, extra recovery time after long international flights, a two-week winter break and a summer off season of at least four weeks."The international match calendar has become denser. The game is faster, more physical and more global than ever," says the report."Although the demands on players are increasing, their physical and psychological capacity has natural limits."The report argues that science backs up its recommendations, without going into details. It also offers quotes top managers and players."If we don’t learn to deal with our players in a better way," said Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. "We will kill the beautiful game. Without the player, the game is not a good one."Pep Guardiola of Manchester City agrees."It’s a crazy schedule and it’s going to kill our players," said the Spaniard. "They have to rest."FIFPRO, which represents more than 65,000 players worldwide, said football could place a limit on how much and when each individual plays but schedule the same number of games."While the top few hundred players in the world are being drained by an overload of competitions, thousands of their colleagues are offered too few playing opportunities to shape a lasting career," wrote Theo van Seggelen the FIFPro Secretary General.FIFPRO surveyed 543 elite players. Some of them clocked up huge numbers of playing minutes and air miles. The leading example is Heung-Min Son, the Tottenham and South Korea star, who last season helped his club reach the Champions League final and his country win gold at the Asian Games. He played 78 games, 53 of them for Spurs. Of those, 72% were played on less than five days rest. Son flew 110,600 kilometres for international matches, a number that does include six competitive games on the European continent with Spurs."Global elite players are faced with match overload which threatens not only their sporting performance but also their health and sustainable career," said the report."There are a limited number of elite athletes whose talents light up our sport. Their careers are short, intense and fragile."

Andy Murray reunites with brother Jamie for doubles win

WASHINGTON: Three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray moved closer to a singles comeback six months after hip surgery, joining brother Jamie for a doubles victory Wednesday at the ATP Washington Open. The Murrays, partnered for the first time since the 2016 Rio Olympics, downed Frenchmen Nicolas Mahut and Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-4, 6-7 (7/9), 10-5 in a first-round match at the US Open tuneup event. The British duo trailed 5-2 in the decisive super-tiebreaker but steamrolled back by taking the last eight points, Jamie Murray´s service winner securing the victory. It was Andy who began the rally with a backhand winner and added backhand volley and drop volley winners on the two penultimate points.Andy Murray is practicing singles and playing doubles as the former world number one, now ranked 222, continues his fightback from right hip surgery in January. The 32-year-old Scotsman feared he could be forced into retirement before the operation. He returned to the court in June but only in doubles while he rehabilitates. Thus far, his hip has responded better than expected, Murray declaring Monday he was "quite close" to a singles comeback, perhaps as soon as Cincinnati in two weeks. That would be only two weeks ahead of the US Open, with Murray also saying if he didn´t make it back for Cincinnati he would likely wait until after the year´s final Grand Slam event, not wishing to make his first test of the hip over best-of-five-set showdowns.Murray, who won Grand Slam titles at the 2012 US Open and in 2013 and 2016 at Wimbledon, most recently played singles at the Australian Open in January, losing a first-round five-setter to Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut. The Murrays, who helped Britain win the 2015 Davis Cup, broke the French duo in the final game to claim the first set then outlasted them to the finish after one hour and 51 minutes. They will next face either Germans Andreas Mies and Kevin Krawietz or third seeds Michael Venus of New Zealand and Raven Klaasen of South Africa.Isner, Raonic advance US fifth seed John Isner advanced to the third round by eliminating Poland´s Hubert Hurkacz 6-4, 6-4. Isner, seeking his 16th career ATP crown, was a Washington runner-up in 2007, 2013 and 2015."It was a good start," Isner said. "I´m happy with the win."Canadian ninth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime outlasted American Reilly Opelka 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to book a third-round date against sixth seed Marin Cilic, the 2014 US Open winner.Canadian eighth seed Milos Raonic, the 2014 Washington winner and only past champion in the field, ripped American Tim Smyczek 6-1, 6-4.In the accompanying WTA event, the third top seed in as many days fell as US third seed Sofia Kenin, who upset Serena Williams at the French Open, lost in the second round to compatriot Lauren Davis 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.

Zidane confident as Benzema hat-trick helps lift gloom

MUNICH: French striker Karim Benzema scored a hat-trick as Real Madrid defeated Fenerbahce 5-3 in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday which temporarily lifted the summer gloom which has engulfed the Spanish giants and coach Zinedine Zidane. However, problems remain for Real as they have now conceded 16 goals in just five friendly matches. They faced their Turkish opponents having been defeated by Tottenham 1-0 on Tuesday in the first match of a four-team event which also features German champions Bayern Munich."We are going to find the solutions, we are going to work. I stand by my players and I know that we are going to make progress and that we will have a very good season," said Zidane whose team had been left bruised by a humiliating 7-3 defeat by city rivals Atletico in a friendly in the United States last week."Nobody likes conceding three goals but we have scored five. For us, this is a positive victory."Zidane´s preparations for the new season have also been overshadowed by the saga of Gareth Bale´s future at the club.theThe Welsh star was left out of the Spanish side´s squad for the two matches in Munich after his planned transfer to Chinese side Jiangsu Suning, who had offered the Welshman a three-year-deal worth £1 million ($1.1 million) a week, broke down.Benzema said the humilation at the hands of Atletico was a thing of the past and that the crucial date will be the weekend of August 17 when the new La Liga season starts."The criticisms after the match against Atletico were normal. It was only a friendly but you cannot concede seven goals," said the French striker."However, it´s no longer on my mind."In the final of the tournament, Tottenham claimed the trophy 3-2 in a penalty shoot-out win over Bayern after the game had ended 2-2.Eric Lamela and Christian Eriksen had put Spurs 2-0 up ahead before 19-year-old Jann-Fiete Arp, signed in the summer from Hamburg, and Alphonso Davis, just 18, pulled the German giants level with second-half strikes

Women’s World Cup to feature 32 teams from 2023, say FIFA

PARIS: The Women’s World Cup will be expanded from 24 to 32 teams at the 2023 edition in an effort to "foster the growth of women’s football", FIFA said Wednesday.FIFA president Gianni Infantino had already said that he was determined to push ahead with plans to expand the World Cup in time for the next tournament after hailing France 2019 as "the best ever"."The astounding success of this year’s World Cup made it very clear that this is the time to keep the momentum going and take concrete steps to foster the growth of women’s football," said Infantino, who has succeeded in expanding the men’s tournament from 32 teams to 48 in time for the 2026 finals in the USA, Mexico and Canada."I am glad to see this proposal -- the first of several -- becoming a reality."The 2019 final was won by the United States although the 24-team tournament featured a few lopsided scores in the group stage, notably the Americans’ 13-0 thrashing of Thailand. On Wednesday, the FIFA Council unanimously agreed to a proposal to expand the number of teams taking part.FIFA has yet to select a host for the 2023 World Cup. The nine candidates are Australia, Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Japan, South Africa, New Zealand and South Korea, potentially with North Korea. The 2019 Women’s World Cup was only the second since it was expanded from 16 teams to 24 in Canada four years ago. The competition started out with 12 teams in 1991.Infantino has already promised to double the prize fund for the next Women’s World Cup having initially raised overall contributions from $15 million to $50 million in time for this year’s competition. He said the increase was part of a wider plan to invest a further $500 million in the women’s game to achieve a total of $1 billion over the next four years."We have more than $2.75 billion of reserves, we don’t need all this money in the Swiss banks, they have enough money," said the 49-year-old."We need to invest this in order to make the whole movement around the world grow."

England captain Root glad to have Stokes as his Ashes deputy

Birmingham, United Kingdom: England captain Joe Root is looking forward to having "natural leader" Ben Stokes back alongside him as his Test deputy during the Ashes. The pair have been friends since their days of playing youth cricket, with Root lobbying for Stokes´s return to a position the all-rounder held until he was involved in a street brawl in Bristol in 2017.Stokes missed five months of international cricket, including England´s 4-0 Ashes series loss in Australia under Root, before being cleared of affray in a court case in August 2018.But the 28-year-old was one of the stars of England´s triumphant World Cup campaign earlier this season and Root, also involved in that success, is eager to have Stokes back as his Test vice-captain after Jos Buttler took over the role."I have asked for a long time (to have Stokes back as vice-captain) but he was made available at the end of the World Cup," Root said during his pre-match press conference at Edgbaston on Wednesday, on the eve of the series opener."It is fantastic to have Ben back, not just playing and playing back somewhere near his best -- it has been coming a long time."The way he stepped up in big moments in that World Cup was just him down to a tee. It is what he does -- he responds well to responsibility and to the big moments."He offers with all three departments -- he bowls, bats and he is one of the best fielders and he drags people with him as a natural leader on the field and in the dressing room."Root praised Buttler but said Buttler was aware Stokes would be brought back as vice-captain when there was an opportunity to do so.England´s World Cup win under the leadership of one-day specialist Eoin Morgan achieved a long-held goal but Root rejected suggestions that meant the pressure to regain the Ashes had eased as a result.- ´All-time high´ -"I think if you speak to anyone who has captained England and is on the verge of an Ashes series, to say it doesn´t mean as much as any other event, I don´t think any of them would agree," he said."It´s huge. It´s a great opportunity. Cricket in this country is probably at an all-time high, it´s got interest if probably hasn´t had for a long time and we´ve got an opportunity as a team to make this summer a very memorable one."Root is going back up to number three in the batting order and Joe Denly dropping down to four as England look to shore up their struggling line-up."I think it´s important to spread the experience out and it gives me an opportunity to lead from the front as well," said Root, England´s best batsman."I also feel I´m in a place where I´ve got my head around the captaincy and my batting and I´m able to separate the two."World Cup-winner Jofra Archer will have to wait for his Test debut after the fast bowler was left out of England´s team announced on Wednesday following his struggles with a side injury."Jofra is obviously coming back from a very serious injury," said Root. "We looked at conditions, what we thought was best... and it also allows him time to get absolutely ready and fit."

Sri Lanka whitewash Bangladesh in one-day series

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka defeated Bangladesh by 122 runs in the third and final one-day international to win the three-match series 3-0 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Wednesday.Dasun Shanaka claimed three wickets for 27 while Kasun Rajitha and Lahiru Kumara grabbed 2-17 and 2-26, respectively as Sri Lanka bowled out Bangladesh for 172 runs in 36 overs after Angelo Mathews  guided them to 294-8.Soumya Sarkar was the only Bangladeshi to offer some resistance with 69 off 86 balls.Soumya took 3-56 and Shafiul Islam claimed 3-68 but Sri Lanka rode on Mathews´s 87 off 90 balls and Kusal Mendis´s 54 off 58 balls to put a big total. The home side won the first match by 91 runs and the second by seven wickets.

Archer misses out as England name Ashes first Test side

World Cup-winner Jofra Archer will have to wait for his Test debut after the fast bowler was left out of the England side named Wednesday for the Ashes opener against Australia at Edgbaston. The Barbados-born quick, who has been struggling with a side injury, was omitted from an original 14-man squad along with fellow pacemen Sam Curran and Olly Stone, who both featured in last week´s Test win against Ireland. With the series comprising five Tests in six weeks, England have opted for caution in how they handle Archer, even though he made a sooner-than-expected return to action with Sussex in a Twenty20 match last week. "Jofra is coming back from quite a serious injury and we looked at the conditions, about a team that can take 20 wickets here, and it allows him time to get absolutely fit," England captain Joe Root said at Edgbaston.James Anderson, England´s all-time leading Test wicket-taker, returns to the side following a calf injury.Anderson, who turned 37 on Tuesday, will again team up with regular new-ball partner Stuart Broad.All-rounders Chris Woakes and Ben Stokes will provide seam-bowling support in the match starting Thursday.Broad and Woakes, who will be playing on his Warwickshire home ground this week, took all 10 wickets between them as Ireland were shot out for just 38 in their second innings at Lord´s.England had already settled on their top seven, with Root going back up to number three and Joe Denly dropping down to four as the hosts look to shore up their struggling batting order.World Cup winners Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes, rested against Ireland, return to a side where off-spinner Moeen Ali is the main specialist slow bowler. Australia hold the Ashes but have not won a Test series away to England since 2001.England team for first Ashes Test: Rory Burns, Jason Roy, Joe Root (capt), Joe Denly, Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow (wkt), Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Stuart Broad, James Anderson

Reds' Yasiel Puig in brawl amid trade reports

Outfielder Yasiel Puig´s tenure in Cincinnati may have ended in dramatic style Tuesday as he waded into a ninth inning brawl with the Pittsburgh Pirates amid reports he was being traded.MLB.com, citing unnamed Major League Baseball sources, was among multiple media outlets reporting that Puig was traded to the Cleveland Indians as part of a three-team deal in which the Indians will send pitcher Trevor Bauer to Cincinnati.News of the trade had broken when Puig took his place in right field in Cincinnati for the top of the ninth inning of what would be an 11-4 Pirates victory.A tense game then turned ugly when Reds pitcher Amir Garrett charged the Pirates dugout and traded punches with opposing relief pitcher Trevor Williams.Garrett´s teammates quickly joined him, Puig included. Reds Manager David Bell ended up in the fracas, even though he had already been ejected in the eighth inning for arguing balls and strikes in a Puig at-bat.Bell had raced out of the tunnel when the fighting started. It wasn´t the first altercation between the Reds and Pirates this season. Puig and Pirates pitcher Chris Archer were both hit with multi-game suspensions in April for their part in a bench-clearing brawl on April 7.Puig, 28, was traded by Los Angeles to the Reds in December after helping the Dodgers reach the World Series. He has hit .255 with 22 home runs, 15 doubles and 60 runs-batted-in this season and will be eligible for free agency when the 2019 campaign ends.According to multiple reports, the Reds will send Puig and pitching prospect Scott Moss to Cleveland.Cincinnati will get Bauer, who is 9-8 for the Indians this season with a 3.79 earned run average. The Indians will also get outfielder Franmil Reyes, left-handed pitcher Logan Allen and infielder Victor Nova from San Diego, while the Padres will get the Reds´ top outfield prospect Taylor Trammell.

Pakistan need practical trainers not laptop coaches: Javed Miandad

ISLAMABAD: Former captain Javed Miandad believes that Pakistan need practical trainers and not laptop coaches to meet the challenges of international cricket.“You may hire coaches at the district level. These coaches may use laptops or other digital coaching methodologies for the strength and conditioning of our upcoming players. But at the highest level we need someone, who can train them on the ground and remove their weaknesses,” he told APP on Wednesday.Miandad did not speak against the usage of advance module of cricket, but was of the view that ground realities should not be ignored.“The ground reality is that majority of our players have rural background. They come from villages and rural towns where they still don’t have access to computers or laptops.Their upbringing as professionals has not been done like that. Now, if you will try to train them that way, they’ll not be able to adapt to the change,” he added. He said that players could not be produced at the highest level rather it was at the junior level that they should be given proper coaching and groomed to become future stars.“True, the digital coaching has worked a lot in foreign countries. But there is a hell of difference between their systems and that of ours. That is why I say we need trainers at the senior level and not the coaches.”The former great cricketer, who also served as Pakistan team coach for three times in the past said someone like Wasim Akram, who had played a lot of international cricket and done well during his playing days could better tune-up players at the national level.“Look the world is availing expertise of Wasim Akram and our other players as they tell their players practically through demonstrations how to remove faults and improve performance.Their tips are doing wonders. So, if other nations are availing their expertise why can’t we ourselves benefit from our former greats cricketers?” Miandad asked. He said that foreign coaches did not have real interest in players’ performance.“They’ll at once jump to take the credit if players perform well under them. But if they (players) figure poorly in some international event, they put the blame on players, saying they (players) are unwilling to learn and improve their skills.“You can hire services of a foreign professional coach if you don’t have experts in that field. But if you have more competent people at home for that slot than it would not be fair to rope in a foreigner." He said if the Pakistan Cricket Board felt it was necessary to appoint foreign coaches then it should appoint them at the district level because that was the best stage to start using ultramodern methodologies.“If you feel their appointment is imperative then send them to the cricket academies.Don’t make your own greats players to work under them at the highest level,” he added.Miandad also asked the board not to make any decision in haste to change Pakistan team’s captain.“I believe Sarfraz has learnt a lot as captain. Now when he is fully trained to lead the national side for important future assignments it will not be a wise to change him.A junior player may be made vice-captain of the national side and groomed under Sarfraz to take the responsibility of captaincy sometime later in the future.

England seek a ´double´ as Australia eye Ashes history

BIRMINGHAM: England return to ´Fortress Edgbaston´ for the first Test against Australia on Thursday looking to round off an already memorable season by completing a World Cup and Ashes double. If the World Cup remains the pinnacle of the 50-over game, for England and Australia there´s nothing quite like a renewal of Test cricket´s oldest rivalry. But now there´s arguably more at stake for both sides than the series result. For England, a home season billed as the most important in a generation started brilliantly with their impressive run to a first men´s World Cup title.International cricket in Britain emerged from behind its satellite television paywall for the first time since the celebrated 2005 Ashes so that millions could watch England´s nerve-shredding Super Over win against New Zealand at Lord´s earlier this month.Building on that groundswell of support is a key part of the England and Wales Cricket Board´s post-tournament strategy. Regaining the Ashes represents an ideal chance to keep those new followers on board, even if none of the five Tests are on free-to-air television. For Australia, an Ashes series win under the dignified leadership of Tim Paine would help draw a line under the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa that led to long bans for former captain Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft. All three batsmen are likely to feature at Edgbaston, with Bancroft set to hear the same booing that greeted Smith and Warner during the World Cup.Australia have not won an Ashes in England for 19 years, with their batsmen struggling against the heavily stitched Dukes ball on pitches that offer seam movement.Yet the first Test will be Australia´s opening first-class match of the tour, although the likes of Bancroft, who has been captaining English county side Durham, have recent experience of local conditions. The way an England side featuring several World Cup stars were dismissed for just 85 by Ireland at Lord´s last week before winning the first Test between the countries tells its own story of ongoing top-order woes.England captain Joe Root plans to move back to number three to help shore up a top order featuring novice Surrey openers Rory Burns and Jason Roy.James Anderson, England´s all-time leading Test wicket-taker, is set to return from a calf injury to lead an attack that could feature World Cup hero Jofra Archer.'Keep the energy going'Australia, meanwhile, are poised to put their faith in a rapid four-man attack featuring James Pattinson and Pat Cummins. Several of England´s World Cup winners appeared jaded against Ireland but Anderson, who no longer plays one-day internationals and so was not involved in that success, hopes he can revive any flagging spirits."For some of us this is the start of our international summer and it´s our job to keep the energy going as a team," said Anderson, 37 on Tuesday. With runs expected to be at premium while the bowlers hold sway, England will hope all-rounders such as Ben Stokes, restored to the vice-captaincy, can again make valuable contributions with the bat.Australia have not won at Edgbaston in any format since 2001, a run that includes their recent World Cup semi-final loss to England, when Roy made a sparkling 85. England, by contrast, have won their last 11 internationals at the raucous Birmingham ground. But a congested schedule, the result of officials cramming an Ashes into the same season as a lengthy World Cup, could have a bigger bearing on the series, the first in the ICC´s new World Test Championship."I really believe it´s a big ask for the fast bowlers on both sides to play five Tests in six weeks," said Australia great Steve Waugh, the victorious captain in the 2001 Ashes, who is mentoring the current squad."Depth in the squad will be important but I honestly think if I was a betting man I wouldn´t back either side because I don´t know who´s going to win."

Root and Paine´s different paths to Ashes captaincy

UNITED KINGDOM: One seemed destined to be a Test captain at 23; the other was thrust into the leadership following an extraordinary crisis and not long after he´d thought of quitting cricket. When England´s Joe Root and Australia´s Tim Paine walk out for the toss prior to the first Ashes opener at Edgbaston starting Thursday they will have taken very different routes to get there.England used to put a premium on so-called ´leadership qualities´, picking the captain ahead of the rest of the side, whereas Australia would select their best XI and appoint one of them as skipper. But an increasingly congested international schedule, which deprives Test regulars the chance of sustained captaincy experience in county cricket, prompted a change in England´s approach.Neither Root, nor his predecessor as England captain, Alastair Cook, have been regarded as superb tacticians. But as top-order batsmen, guaranteed their place in the side, they have been obvious captaincy candidates particularly as, unlike frontline bowlers, they don´t have to worry about when to bring themselves on.When Root took over in 2017, he had been a captain in just four first-class matches, one of which saw him dubbed "Craptain" by his Yorkshire team-mates after Middlesex chased down a target of 472.Former England off-spinner Graeme Swann voiced fears that captaincy would have a negative impact on Root´s run-scoring.Root´s responded with a match-winning 190 against South Africa at Lord´s, in his first match in charge, and a century in England´s first day-night Test, against West Indies at Edgbaston.- Lead from the front -But he went more than a year before again reaching three figures in a Test, a period that included a 4-0 Ashes series loss in Australia. Now England will hope a return to number three allied to the responsiblity of leading from the front will improve the 28-year-old Root´s conversion rate of fifties to hundreds (41-16 at present).Paine´s road to the captaincy was far more rocky and not just because of a belief that wicketkeepers already have enough to do in the field. He was set to retire in 2017 and take a job with a cricket equipment manufacturer, yet by March 2018 he was Australia´s captain.Paine made his Australia debut in a neutral Test against Pakistan at Lord´s in 2009 and he appeared the heir to Brad Haddin as the long-term wicketkeeper.A finger injury blighted his career and there were times when he was not even the first-choice wicketkeeper for Tasmania. But when rival glovemen Peter Nevill and Matthew Wade were dropped ahead of the 2017/18 Ashes, Paine made the most of his recall. Then came the 2018 ball-tampering scandal during a Test in Cape Town, which saw then Australia captain Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner given year-long bans by Cricket Australia for their roles in a flagrant breach of the rules.Paine, now 34, was thrust into the captaincy to help instill values that would sit well with Australia´s shocked fans, never mind opponents who had become weary of the team´s crude ´sledging,´ or verbal abuse.Paine is the first captain chosen to lead an Australia Test tour of England primarily because he is a ´decent chap´ since Ian Johnson in 1956 -- a series England won.But given it´s 19 years since Australia last won an Ashes in England, perhaps captaincy by macho posturing hasn´t worked for them.In the words of the late Australia captain Richie Benaud, a hugely successful and sporting skipper: "Captaincy is 90 percent luck and 10 percent skill, but don´t try it without that 10 percent."

Teen star Coco, top seed Stephens crash out in Washington

WASHINGTON: Coco Gauff, the American teen who electrified Wimbledon with a last-16 run, and US top seed Sloane Stephens crashed out Tuesday in round one of the WTA Washington Open.Eighth-ranked Stephens, the 2017 US Open champion, lost to Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson 6-2, 7-5 while 15-year-old qualifier Gauff fell to Kazakhstan’s 84th-ranked Zarina Diyas 6-4, 6-2."Every loss is something I learn from," Gauff said. "Overall it was a good experience."The US Open women’s hardcourt tuneup event lost its only top-10 entrant in Stephens and its star attraction in 146th-ranked Gauff, whose loss came in her first main-draw match since she fell to eventual champion Simona Halep at Wimbledon."I’m looking forward to the US Open and hope I can make a good result there," Gauff said. "I’m going to work on being more aggressive and trusting myself a little more on the court."Gauff has been shocked at the whirlwind speed at which her life has changed and that crowds still pack every seat to watch her."I’m happy for all the support," said Gauff. "I thought it would settle back after a couple weeks but I guess people are still excited."All this has changed so quickly so it’s hard sometimes but having the experience is definitely going to help me for the US Open."Stephens, whose first WTA title came at Washington in 2015, exited with one win or less for the eighth time in 10 non-Grand Slam starts this year."I could have played better," said Stephens. "It was hot. Tough conditions. But you know from here only thing you can do is improve."Stephens, 26, split with coach Kamau Murray in late 2018 after four years together and has been guided by Sven Groeneveld for the past two months."I’ve tried to have a good attitude and let the chips fall where they may going forward," Stephens said."We’re starting fresh. We’ve done pretty well. I need to have fun and enjoy what I’m doing."Peterson collected her first victory in nine tries against a top-10 rival."Fought for every point that was out there," Peterson said. "I stayed in the moment."Diyas dispatched the crowd favorite before a packed second stadium."I knew there was going to be a big crowd and they were going to support her so I was ready for it. I was more aggressive. I served better."She’s so young but she’s really good. She’s so strong and she has a big serve. She’s moving well. I think she’s going to be very big in the future."‘Sky is the limit’ Gauff, who can’t yet drive, has impressed foes and friends alike."She’s cool. She’s locked in and ready to go," said 40th-ranked ATP pal Frances Tiafoe. "She will have a hell of a career. The sky is the limit if she stays focused."US second seed Madison Keys -- ousted by US wildcard Hailey Baptiste 7-6 (7/4), 6-2 -- was impressed at Gauff’s poise in Wimbledon’s intense atmosphere."How she has handled it and how mature she is -- she’s so wise beyond her years," Keys said. "I was just really impressed with how well she handled herself on court. I’m not sure that many of us could have done so well."Everyone knew she was a great player and that she could do a lot. The fact she did it right off the bat was pretty impressive."Gauff is already a role model, Keys saying: "It has been fun watching her and reminding myself I used to be that excited to play."

US coach Ellis resigns after second Women’s World Cup win

WASHINGTON: Jill Ellis, who coached the United States to a second consecutive Women’s World Cup title earlier this month, will step down after her team’s US Victory Tour in early October, US Soccer announced Tuesday. The Americans beat the Netherlands 2-0 in the final on July 7 in France to defend the crown they captured four years earlier in Canada.Ellis, who was appointed to the job in May 2014 after Tom Sermanni was removed a month earlier, has compiled an overall record of 102-7 with 18 drawn ahead of her farewell tour with the US squad."When I accepted the head coaching position this was the timeframe I envisioned," Ellis said. "The timing is right to move on and the program is positioned to remain at the pinnacle of women’s soccer."Change is something I have always embraced in my life and for me and my family this is the right moment."Ellis, 52, will make appearances for the US Soccer Federation for at least a year."The US Soccer Federation and the sport in general owes Jill a debt of gratitude," US Soccer president Carlos Cordeiro said."Jill was always extremely passionate about this team, analytical, tremendously focused and not afraid to make tough decisions while giving her players the freedom to play to their strengths."She helped raise the bar for women’s soccer in the USA and the world and given the history of this program, the level of success she achieved is even more remarkable."Ellis guided the Americans to wins in eight tournaments, although they settled for fifth at the Rio Olympics in quest of a fourth consecutive gold medal."The opportunity to coach this team and work with these amazing women has been the honor of a lifetime," Ellis said. "I want to thank and praise them for their commitment and passion to not only win championships but also raise the profile of this sport globally while being an inspiration to those who will follow them."US Soccer is expected to name a new women’s national team general manager soon and then begin the process of looking for Ellis’s replacement, who will become the ninth coach in the program’s history."I want to sincerely thank the world class coaches and staff with whom I’ve had the privilege to work," Ellis said. "They are quintessential professionals and even better people."

Sri Lanka considering foreign cricket coaches

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka was considering applications from three "top international cricket coaches", Sports Minister Harin Fernando said Tuesday amid reports incumbent Chandika Hathurusingha has been asked to quit.Following Sri Lanka´s disappointing World Cup, where they finished in sixth-place, Hathurusingha and his assistants were expected to be shown the door ahead of the upcoming home series against New Zealand next month.Fernando said there were three top international coaches willing to replace Hathurusingha, a former Sri Lankan Test player.Without naming Hathurusingha, the minister said the coach´s remuneration -- $40,000 a month -- was too high, adding: "If we are winning only 35 percent of the games, no need to pay such high fees to coaches."Fernando said the international candidates were asking for lower salaries of between $17,500 to $25,000 a month, but did not name them. He suggested Hathurusingha could be retained at a lower salary."For the price we are paying now, we can get two foreign coaches," he said."We must renegotiate the high fees we are paying at the moment. If they don´t agree, they can go," he said.Meanwhile Hathurusingha has insisted he would stay to see out his contract."I have another 16 months," he told reporters earlier this month after returning to Colombo from the World Cup in England. "I hope to remain until my contract runs out."Hathurusingha also acknowledged that team management had to "accept responsibility for what happened".Sri Lanka cricket was in crisis when Hathurusingha was appointed in December 2017, after a successful three-year spell in charge of Bangladesh. They had just been hammered in Tests by India at home and away, and played poorly in one-day internationals. Under Hathurusingha, Sri Lanka notched up Test wins against England and Australia. The first Test against New Zealand will be played in Galle starting August 14, and the second will begin on August 22 at Colombo´s P. Sara stadium.Three T20s will be played on August 31, September 2 and September 6.
