Dubai: Captain Aaron Finch warned Australia will embark on their World Cup defence next month with confidence riding high after completing an ODI sweep against Pakistan on Sunday hot on the heels of a series victory in India.Written off after a torrid 15 months which saw Australia win just three of 18 one-day internationals, Finch led the 2015 World Cup winners from 2-0 down last month to beat Virat Kohli’s formidable side 3-2, Australia’s first series win in India since 2009.They then romped to a 5-0 rout of a depleted Pakistan who rested six top players for the series played in the United Arab Emirates, including regular captain Sarfraz Ahmed, ahead of the World Cup which begins on May 30."We’ll go to the World Cup with a lot of confidence now, even after a lot of people wrote us off," said Finch who was declared man of the series for his 451 runs including two hundreds and two fifties."Potentially we had a real focus coming here and that was our last hit-out before the World Cup so we wanted to go into that tournament with a lot of momentum," he said after inflicting a fourth whitewash on Pakistan in a bilateral series.Winners of 2015 World Cup at home, Australia had endured a miserable time in limited-overs cricket since last year’s ball-tampering controversy in South Africa.The scandal resulted in former captain and vice-captain Steve Smith and David Warner being banned for a year, suspensions that expired only last week, and Australia were then routed 5-0 in England and dropped home series 2-1 to both South Africa and India.- Tough selection calls -Finch admitted the potential return of Warner, who has been in top form in the Indian Premier League, and Smith would mean some difficult choices when the World Cup squad is named later this month."There will be some unlucky guys," said Finch of squad that could also see the return of fast bowlers Mitchell Starc, Jos Hazlewood and Pat Cummins after injury."Everyone who has an opportunity has played some great cricket. At the end of the day there will be some tough calls, but its exciting for Australia at the same time because six months back a lot of people were slamming us."A lot of people were writing us off, not in just the one-day cricket but in all forms of the game. It’s been really positive last couple of months and we have been building nicely."Pakistan’s head coach Mickey Arthur, who has also coached South Africa and Australia, said the defending champions were in good shape."All the final jigsaw pieces are coming together nicely. Australia look a very, very good side. Federer sweeps past Isner in Miami final for 101st title
MIAMI: Roger Federer lifted the 101st title of his remarkable career on Sunday in dominating style, beating ATP Miami Open defending champion John Isner 6-1, 6-4.Federer, who has skipped the whole clay court season for the past two years, declared the triumph over the big-serving American in just 63 minutes was an ideal performance from which to launch a French Open bid."I will have to take baby steps going back onto the clay, I have played so little in the last few years so I don´t know what to expect but what this win does is takes even more pressure off me," Federer said."Already just how I´ve been playing and moving here makes me believe just going on vacation now, a bit of a break, and then preparation, you physically I should be fine, but again, we´ll see how the body is going to react."I am excited. Grief-stricken New Zealand postpone U-19 tour to Bangladesh
DHAKA: Grief-stricken New Zealand have postponed a tour of their youth cricket team to Bangladesh, saying they were still in a "state of shock" following the Christchurch mosque attacks earlier this month, an official said on Sunday.The New Zealand Under-19 cricket team was scheduled to arrive in Dhaka on April 10 to play five youth one-day international matches against their Bangladeshi counterparts.But the Bangladesh Cricket Board chief executive officer Nizamuddin Chowdhury said the tour has now been postponed as the Kiwis have yet to recover fully from the shock of the racist massacre that left 50 Muslims dead."We have been recently communicated by the New Zealand cricket authorities that they are unable to send the youth team to Bangladesh as the country is still in a state of shock," he said."The series has now been postponed. It will be held at a later date," he said.Bangladesh´s Test cricket team which was on tour in New Zealand narrowly escaped the March 15 attacks.At least 17 members of the team drove up to Christchurch´s Al Noor mosque in a bus to join Friday prayers when a white supremacist gunman stormed the building, in what is thought to be the worst act of terror directed against Muslims in the West.They later watched as blood-soaked victims staggered from the building, according to team manager Khaled Mashud, who said if they had arrived just a few minutes later the team could have been caught up in the massacre.The team was in Christchurch for their third and final Test match against the home side scheduled to begin the next day, which was promptly cancelled to allow the cric keters to return home at the earliest possible time.

Sri Lanka Test captain arrested after traffic accident
COLOMBO: Sri Lankan Test cricket captain Dimuth Karunaratne has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after an accident in the capital, police said Sunday.Karunaratne, 30, was taken into custody following the pre-dawn accident that resulted in the driver of a three-wheel taxi being taken to hospital."We have released him on personal bail, but he was asked to be in court on Monday for a magisterial inquiry," a police spokesman said, adding that his vehicle was detained.The incident comes as Sri Lankan cricket officials mull who to name as captain of the one-day squad for the World Cup hosted by England and Wales from May 30.Karunaratne, who led Sri Lanka to a stunning Test series victory against South Africa last month, had been in the frame to lead the one-day side as well.Sri Lanka´s cricket board said it would investigate the incident."Sri Lanka Cricket will also follow the due process as per his ´Player Contractual Obligation´ ... and conduct an inquiry in order to take necessary action," the board said in a statement.

Australian bowlers deny ‘false’ Warner Test boycott reports
Sydney: Australia’s top bowlers Sunday lashed out at "false" and "inflammatory" claims they were planning a Test boycott if David Warner had not been kicked off the team in the wake of the ball-tampering scandal.Warner was widely seen as the instigator of the plot to use sandpaper to alter the ball during the third Test in Cape Town last year, with rookie opener Cameron Bancroft carrying out plan and then-captain Steve Smith turning a blind eye.The Sydney Morning Herald reported on Friday that Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon all intended to pull out of the fourth Test if Warner was not removed.The newspaper, citing multiple sources, said it "highlights the extent of the fracture within the dressing-room in the immediate aftermath".But a statement from the quartet Sunday denied a boycott had been considered and, with Smith and Warner now free to play again after their one-year bans expired on Friday, the bowlers said they were focused on "moving forward".- ‘Misleading’ -"The article claims we intended to withdraw from the fourth Test during last year’s tour of South Africa had David Warner been free to play," the statement said."This claim is disappointing on a number of fronts but most importantly because it is false."It added that allegations "which question our relationship with David are inflammatory and misleading"."As a team we are all focused on moving forward together and helping the Australian men’s team prepare for the World Cup and the Ashes."Smith and Warner’s reintegration into the international fold has already begun with the pair meeting the one-day team in Dubai this month as they gear up for the World Cup in England. Proud Barty defeats Pliskova to capture WTA Miami Open title
Miami: Ashleigh Barty´s transformation is complete after the Australian defeated Czech fifth seed Karolina Pliskova 7-6 (7/1) 6-3 Saturday to win the biggest singles title of her career at the WTA Miami Open.The 22-year-old Aussie quit tennis five years ago after finding the mental grind of the tour too much to bear, turning to professional cricket in a bid to find sporting happiness.Barty, however, knew she had the tennis skills to compete at the very top and after returning in February 2016, has taken her career to an elite level, culminating in her first-ever WTA Premier Mandatory title to follow on from the US Open doubles crown she won last September.Barty, a junior Wimbledon winner at age 15, will rise from 11th to number nine in the world rankings and become the first Australian woman since Sam Stosur in June 2013 to crack the top 10."It feels like it´s a long time ago now since I took the break and since I came back," said Barty, who also reached the doubles semi-finals at the Hard Rock Stadium with Victoria Azarenka."It´s been a few years now, but I certainly feel like I´m a very different person. Pakistan fined for slow over-rate in fourth ODI
DUBAI: Pakistan were fined for maintaining a slow over-rate against Australia in the fourth ODI in Dubai on Friday.Imad Wasim, the Pakistan captain for the match, has been fined 20 per cent of his match fee.Jeff Crowe of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the fine after Imad Wasim’s side was ruled to be one over short of its target after time allowances were taken into consideration.In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC code of Conduct for Players and Players Support Personnel, which relates to minor over-rate offences, players are fined 10 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, with the captain fined double that amount.As such, Imad has been fined 20 per cent of his match fee, while his players have received 10 per cent fines. If Pakistan commit another minor over-rate breach in an ODI within 12 months of this offence with Imad as captain, it will be deemed a second offence by him and Imad will face a suspension.Imad pleaded guilty to the offence after the end of the match and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing.On-field umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Rashid Riaz, third umpire Michael Gough and fourth umpire Ahsan Raza leveled the charge.
