England cruise to seven-wicket victory over New Zealand in T20I opener

A three-wicket haul from spinner Mitchell Santner was not enough to rescue the Black Caps.CHRISTCHURCH: England cruised to a seven-wicket victory over New Zealand in the opening T20I in Christchurch on Friday.James Vincent top-scored for the tourists with 59, notching his maiden T20 half century as England chased down New Zealand's 154-run target in 18.3 overs.A three-wicket haul from spinner Mitchell Santner was not enough to rescue the Black Caps, whose batting line-up failed to fire after England won the toss and opted to bowl.Eoin Morgan predicted the Hagley Oval pitch would become harder to play as the match wore on."The wicket looks extremely good for this time of year but the winds tends to get up here and it can be difficult to defend at time in the second innings," he said.Morgan named three debutants in the team, Worcestershire seamer Pat Brown, Somerset all-rounder Lewis Gregory and Surrey all-rounder Sam Curran."It's exciting for these guys to get this opportunity on a tour where we´re missing about seven of our top players," he said."It's a chance for them to stake their claim."Tim Southee, who is captaining the Kiwi side after regular skipper Kane Williamson was sidelined with a hip injury, said his team was looking forward to playing on home soil after a recent tour of Sri Lanka."We're coming back to conditions that we´re familiar with and the guys know pretty well," he said.It is the first time the sides have met since the one-day World Cup final in July, which ended with scores tied but England claiming victory because they had scored more boundaries. However, both teams insist their focus for the five-match series is on preparing for the T20 World Cup being held in Australia next year.England are ranked second in the world in T20s, while New Zealand are sixth. The second fixture in the five-match series takes place in Wellington on Sunday.

Pak Aus T20I: When Akmal bros showed their best and worst in 2010

2010 was the year for the elder Akmal but the same could not be said for the younger one. Photo: File T20I cricket has been around for almost 15 years but believe it or not, during all this time, Pakistan have played just one T20I against Australia in Australia. That match was played on Feb 5, 2010 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground when Pakistan came within a whisker of writing their T20I record Down Under with a thrilling win.For better or for worse, that game was all about siblings Kamran and Umar Akmal.Chasing a modest 128-run target, the Shoaib Malik-led side suffered a nightmare start in the run chase, which is nothing unusual for Pakistan cricket. With namesake openers Imran Nazir and Imran Farhat both gone at the combined score of 10, Kamran, who had been pretty useless on that tour till that point, finally decided to make himself useful for a change. The elder Akmal had dropped catches in bunches in the 3-0 Test whitewash and contributed just 68 runs with the subsequent bat in the ODI series at an average of 17. Pakistan had been swept aside 5-0 in the ODIs too.But with the chips down, the tour unsalvageable and the PCB sharpening its knives backs home, Kamran showed up in the only T20I.As wickets tumbled around him, he became a one-man wrecking ball, smashing a 33-ball 64 laced with seven 4s and two 6s. In a meagre 120-something target, a 60-something blitzkrieg from a single batter usually proves more than enough to get the win. However, nothing is usual in matters of Pakistan cricket, even more so when in Australia. After Shoaib Malik became the fourth batsman to fall at the score of 59 in the 9th over, at the crease were Kamran and the younger Umar.Kamran, as we’ve told, was trying to cap a disastrous tour with a super late consolation. When he was out on the first ball of the 15th over, the scoreline read 98-5. The equation was simple: 30 needed off 35 balls with one Akmal gone but the other one, supposedly a finisher, at the crease.Umar still also had half the batting line-up and the entire tail left to work with. Among those left was a certain fan-favourite named Fawad Alam and guys like Rana Naveed-ul-Hasan and Umar Gul, both of whom could swing the ball but also bat.Umar, as is the story of his career, could not get the team home. His 25-ball 21 had no boundaries. Of course, Fawad, and especially Rana were the main culprits, wasting 14 precious balls in the last few overs for a combined contribution of just two runs (a run each). But Umar, too, cannot not dodge blame, for he was not supposed to let a tail-ender like Rana face nine balls. The match was still not completely out of reach in the final over when Pakistan needed 10 off six balls — a pretty doable task. But alas, Umar, instead of at least staying till the end, was out on the first ball of the over.In the end, number 11 batsman Mohammad Asif was required to hit a six to tie the match. He could only manage a four as Pakistan lost by two runs.Unfortunately, the Akmal brothers will not be able to make amends as neither has been picked for the T20I series between Australia and Pakistan which starts Sunday.

Zidane settles on core selection but Madrid need regular results

MADRID: Real Madrid´s 5-0 thumping of Leganes on Wednesday was their biggest win in La Liga since his first spell as coach but Zinedine Zidane was hardly in a celebratory mood.In the press conference after the match, one expectant journalist asked if it was Madrid´s best performance of the season. "No I don´t think so," Zidane said.Another suggested this was at least their most complete showing so far. "There are people who will think it´s our best game," Zidane said. "Not for me, but we have to be happy."A third finally questioned which matches did Zidane prefer, to which the Frenchman proposed the season´s opening win over Celta Vigo or last week´s 1-0 victory over Galatasaray in the Champions League. The fact is there are few candidates, from a campaign in which Real Madrid have produced only in spurts, flitting between commanding and chaotic even within individual matches, let alone from week-to-week.Their win over Leganes was their most emphatic in the league since they beat Celta 6-0 under Zidane in May 2018 and there have also been resilient away victories at Galatasaray and Sevilla this term, not to mention goal flurries against Granada and Levante. But both Granada and Levante almost pulled off comebacks while miserable defeats away at promoted Mallorca and Paris Saint-Germain exposed a bluntness up front and fragility at the back that felt all-too familiar."The problem is we have to show every three days that we are good," Zidane said earlier this month. "That is the difficulty and that is what we do not do."After 10 games, the juncture when teams can supposedly be judged, the picture is still not clear, yet there are signs, in Zidane´s selection at least, that his second tenure is taking shape.A spine has been established with the places of Thibaut Courtois, Sergio Ramos, Raphael Varane, Toni Kroos and Karim Benzema seemingly assured.Dani Carvajal has been more reliable at right-back than the erratic Alvaro Odriozola while on the other side Ferland Mendy has yet to dislodge Marcelo, despite his 50 million arrival last summer.Casemiro remains the squad´s only defensive midfielder and Fede Valverde has brought much-needed energy into the midfield, leaving the 34-year-old Luka Modric to be used more sparingly.Up front, Eden Hazard is still not at his best but enjoys a connection with Benzema. If Gareth Bale´s fitness or future makes him unpickable, Rodrygo is an exciting alternative on the right, the 18-year-old´s pace adding an extra dimension Madrid have so lacked in attack."He has character," Zidane said. "And he is getting better and better."Zidane´s Madrid now have a base but with Real Betis to come at home on Satuday it remains to be seen whether they can be consistent enough to keep up with Barcelona, who have won seven games on the bounce ahead of their match away at Levante.Lionel Messi´s mesmeric performance against Real Valladolid served as an announcement that he is fit and firing again, meaning Barca´s title rivals may no longer be afforded so much room for slip-ups."We have to look forward," said coach Ernesto Valverde on Tuesday. "What happens is you see Messi playing like that and it seems that it´s easy, but it´s not easy at all."Diego Simeone insists Atletico Madrid are a work in progress but their draw away at Alaves in midweek leaves them playing catch-up, with a tough trip to Sevilla on Saturday to come.Granada and Real Sociedad, the league´s two surprise high-fliers, meet at Los Carmenes on Sunday.Fixtures (times GMT)SaturdayEspanyol v Valencia (1200), Levante v Barcelona (1500), Sevilla v Atletico Madrid (1730), Real Madrid v Real Betis (2000)SundayReal Valladolid v Mallorca (1100), Villarreal v Athletic Bilbao (1300), Osasuna v Alaves (1500), Celta Vigo v Getafe (1730), Leganes v Eibar (1730), Granada v Real Sociedad (2000)

Nadal eases past Wawrinka as Djokovic sets up Tsitsipas clash

PARIS: Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic continued their battle for the year-end world number one ranking on Thursday as both players reached the Paris Masters quarter-finals with wins over Stan Wawrinka and Kyle Edmund respectively. The 33-year-old Nadal is already guaranteed to usurp Djokovic at the rankings summit next week, but winning a maiden Bercy title would also secure the year-end top spot before next month´s ATP Tour Finals in London. He produced an impressive display to take his career head-to-head record against three-time Grand Slam champion Wawrinka to 19-3 with a clinical 6-4, 6-4 victory.Djokovic had earlier booked his last-eight place with a 7-6 (9/7), 6-1 win over Britain´s Edmund.Nadal has never won the Paris Masters or the ATP Finals and only two of his 84 titles have come indoors."That´s the beautiful thing about this sport, (to) have the capacity to adapt yourself to the different conditions," said the 12-time French Open winner, who called the doctor onto the court in the second set to help deal with a stomach problem.Nadal will face 2008 champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarter-finals after the French wildcard saved two match points to edge out Germany´s Jan-Lennard Struff 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8/6)."I have a match against a player that is playing well," said Nadal."I need to do a lot of things well, but I hope to be ready to make that happen."Nadal took the first set thanks to a single break of serve in game three, saving break points in the second and eighth games himself before serving it out in style.Wawrinka´s backhand started to fire at the start of the second set, but Nadal kept the Swiss at bay, helped by one incredible forehand winner to direct a smash from his opponent into the corner of the court. The 19-time Grand Slam champion saw off Wawrinka´s challenge with a break to lead 5-4 in the second set and served out the match to make it his seventh Paris Masters quarter-final in as many appearances.- Djokovic to face Tsitsipas -Top seed Djokovic needed seven set points in the first set before beating Edmund with relative comfort by racing through the second to make his eighth quarter-final in the tournament."I was feeling energy-wise better and felt more alert, just more strength, more energy, more speed," said the 32-year-old, who has been struggling with illness this week. The 16-time Grand Slam title-winner is chasing a record-extending fifth Bercy crown and will next face world number seven Stefanos Tsitsipas, who beat Alex de Minaur 6-3, 6-4.The 21-year-old Tsitsipas leads his head-to-head with Djokovic 2-1, after victories at the Shanghai Masters earlier this month and the 2018 Canadian Open."He (Tsitsipas) is one of the best players in the world," said Djokovic. "He´s already (an) established player."Djokovic is hoping to tie Pete Sampras´ record of finishing six years as the world´s best player, while Nadal is looking to achieve the feat for a fifth time.- Dimitrov downs Thiem -Former world number three Grigor Dimitrov produced a fantastic performance to beat fifth seed Dominic Thiem 6-3, 6-2 and reach the last eight in Paris for the first time.Dimitrov was the world number 78 heading into the US Open, but reached the semi-finals and is now ranked 27th.The 28-year-old will take on Cristian Garin for a semi-final spot, after the unseeded Chilean saved three match points in a deciding-set tie-break to end the run of French qualifier Jeremy Chardy with a 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, 7-6 (8/6) success.Greek star Tsitsipas, who has reached at least the semis in each of his last three tournaments, eased past De Minaur, ending the Australian´s hopes of qualifying for the Tour Finals.Gael Monfils, who is chasing a spot at the ATP Finals, takes on Moldova´s Radu Albot in Thursday´s final match, with the winner to face Denis Shapovalov, after the Canadian youngster beat sixth seed Alexander Zverev for the first time -- 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.
