Former Indian women’s cricket team coach Tushar Arothe was arrested on Monday night, in Indian district Vadodara, in connection with Indian Premier League (IPL) betting charges along with 18 others. The Detection of Crime branch officials arrested Arothe with the betting racket during a raid in his café.DCB arrested 19 persons include Arothe and two partners in the cafe Hemang Patel and Nishcal Mitha. Their vehicles and phones have been seized by the DCB officials. Crime branch detective said that Hemang was betting on a IPL match between Delhi Capitals and Kings XI Punjab on Monday. All the accused were later released on bail.“We had received a tip-off about the betting activities at the Café Stock Exchange in Alkapuri where a big screen was placed to relay IPL matches live. We kept a watch there and conducted a raid on Monday night. Some people sitting in a shed next to the café were involved in online betting on the IPL match,” DCP Crime Branch JS Jadeja told the Times of India.Jadeja further told that Thushar Arothe is one of the accused as he is one of the owners of the café and has been accused of providing space for betting on matches. Whether he was actively involved or not in the betting is still under investigation. But his presence on the premises when the raid was conducted is raising many questions.However, Arothe completely denied the allegations. He said, “I don’t know why I was arrested. If some customers come in my café and bet on mobile phone apps, how would I know that? As far as Hemang is concerned, he is a partner in the café but he always sat with his friends. I have no idea that he was placing bets. I have not committed any illegal activity and I will fight it out for my honor.”The recent match-fixing allegation has created an air of controversy in the cricket series. Recently, Lalit Kumar Modi, the former commissioner of IPL has had alleged that match-fixing took place during an IPL match played between Delhi Capitals (DC) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
